About the artist
Bennett Pang is a Hong Kong male singer, born in 1949, who plays guitar in The Wynners. He lived near Electric Road in North Point on Hong Kong Island in his early years, and his father ran a tailor shop.
His schooling connected Bennett Pang with his future bandmates. Bennett Pang and Anthony Chan were both neighbors and classmates at SKH St. Michael's Primary School; his father later sent him to board at Instituto Salesiano in Macao in the hope that he would focus on his studies. Danny Yip subsequently also went to school in Macao and became Bennett Pang's classmate.
Before pursuing a career with a band, Bennett Pang worked in printing and also as a musician in hotels and nightclubs. From 1969 to 1972, he was a member of The Loosers; in 1973, he re-formed the band with Anthony Chan and Danny Yip, then invited Alan Tam and Kenny Bee to join and renamed it The Wynners. Bennett Pang played electric guitar in the band.
His solo singing career began in the 1980s. Music producer 馮添枝 recognized Bennett Pang's talent and signed him to PolyGram, after which he released the albums "二等良民" and "可愛的笑容". According to an overview by The Paper, Bennett Pang released a total of seven solo albums during his time at PolyGram.
In 1983, his solo works appeared successively on local music-award lists: "聲音" was selected in the second-quarter Jade Solid Gold selection, "一段情" was selected in the third quarter and entered the annual Jade Solid Gold Best Ten, while "可愛的笑容" received a gold record at the seventh Hong Kong Gold Disc Award Presentation.
Duets continued to appear in the quarterly selections: "停不了的愛", performed by Bennett Pang and 雷安娜, was selected in the second quarter of 1984, while "玩的格言", performed with Alan Tam, was selected in the fourth quarter of 1985.
While signed to a television station, Bennett Pang also ran a food and beverage sideline. After becoming a contract singer with TVB in 1983, he converted a Shau Kei Wan restaurant that his father had handed over to him into a folk-music restaurant and operated it for two years.
An immigration application and a change of television stations followed. Bennett Pang applied to immigrate to Vancouver, Canada, in 1988; in 1989, after TVB was unable to offer higher pay, he moved to Asia Television and became one of its entertainers. While at Asia Television, Bennett Pang sang three television drama theme songs: "前途", "鬼咁痴纏", and "正義朋友". In 1992, he ended his contract with Asia Television to avoid interfering with live performances in different places.
Bennett Pang's work later expanded into programming, business, and music education. In the early 2000s, he filmed an online program for 東方魅力 in which he shared fishing techniques; in 2008, he hosted the "魚樂健康新一派" segment of TVB's "都市閒情". Bennett Pang also opened a leather-goods factory in Dongguan with his family, retailed red wine, and occasionally took part in on-screen performances and concerts. In an interview with on.cc, Bennett Pang said that before the pandemic he had opened the "彭健新音乐学院" in Foshan, serving as its supervisor while Alan Tam served as principal, but the school's operations were later suspended for various reasons.
Speaking about The Wynners' farewell party, Bennett Pang said solo development was "very difficult," whereas he felt "very comfortable" in The Wynners, leaving him both resigned to and appreciative of the farewell.
