About the artist

Born on January 3, 1965, Calvin Choy is a Hong Kong male singer, actor, lyricist, composer, record producer, and television host. He grew up in Lei Yue Mun Road Estate in Kwun Tong, Kowloon, and was a neighbor of Edmond So; in 1978, when they were in Primary Six, the two were classmates at Kwun Tong Methodist Primary School. After entering secondary school, he transferred several times because of poor grades and because he moved away from his original home with his elder sister and took part-time jobs. His schools included Kwun Tong Kung Lok Government Secondary School, the Yau Ma Tei branch of Newman Catholic College, and Ricci College in Kowloon. After completing Form Five, Calvin Choy worked in advertising design before entering show business.

Calvin Choy's music career is tied to the formation of Grasshopper: he formed the group with Edmond So and Remus Choy, and its name came from the fact that the Chinese surnames of all three contain the grass radical. The group entered the fourth New Talent Singing Awards in 1985. That same year, Calvin Choy also entered the second Po Leung Kuk Hong Kong 18 Districts Amateur Singing Contest. In the 1980s, Anita Mui invited Grasshopper to appear as guests at her solo concert, giving the three their first performance at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Calvin Choy later pursued his singing career under Anita Mui's mentorship and also served as producer for her records.
