About the artist
Christopher Wong, also known as Chris Wong, is a Hong Kong singer-songwriter and radio host, born in Hong Kong on November 18, 1961, ancestral home Xinhui, Guangdong, with a French great-grandmother. Christopher Wong attended Cheung Chuk Shan English College, worked at an advertising company after finishing sixth form in 1980, entered the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1981, transferred to English the next year, and graduated in 1985. Before joining the music scene Christopher Wong was already hosting programs at RTHK. In 1983 PolyGram released the single "劍仙李白" for Christopher Wong and wanted to sign, but Christopher Wong insisted on finishing university first, and the matter came to nothing. After graduating in 1985 Christopher Wong formally became a DJ at RTHK, and in 1986 "再遇" reached the final of the ABU Popular Song Contest. In 1987 Christopher Wong formed "开心队" with 余劍明 and 黃靄君 to host a show, and later co-hosted "二人世界" and "夜倾情" with Vivian Chow and 陳海琪 respectively.
In 1989 the album "没结果的一些感情" was released; of its songs, "倾心" received the CASH award for the song with the highest television airplay of the year. The same year Christopher Wong appeared with Andy Lau and 鍾楚紅 in the film "愛人同志", co-hosted the TVB music show "周末任你点" with 周美茵, and was voted RTHK's most popular DJ. In April 1990 the DJ contract with RTHK expired; in between, Christopher Wong was a guest host of "新夜倾情" on Metro Radio. In 1991 the novel "两件次货" was published; in 1992 Christopher Wong joined Fitto Records and released the album "传闻"; on August 5, 1993 the album "平常心" was released.
From 1994 to 2001, after a break with the management company, Christopher Wong moved to Toronto, Canada, to start a business in interior design, and the performing career stopped; in that time Christopher Wong wrote songs only for friends Vivian Chow, Andy Lau and 郭晉安. In a 2004 interview with Sohu Entertainment, Christopher Wong explained that the manager wanted the style of "晚秋" continued and covers of songs that were hits on the mainland, while Christopher Wong saw the work as that of a singer-songwriter and would not give up writing; the two could not agree, and the record company was caught in the middle: "Reason told me I should pause the work I was doing, think about my own direction, so I left."
In 2002, ending seven years abroad, Christopher Wong returned to the Hong Kong music scene as a guest performer at a 黎瑞恩 concert and joined Universal Music. By Christopher Wong's own account, friend 黎瑞恩 asked for several months before Christopher Wong agreed to come back from Canada as a guest; later, finding the audience response good, Christopher Wong began singing and holding concerts again.
In 2004 Christopher Wong left Universal Music again, later moved back to Canada, and often gave charity performances there. In September 2005 Christopher Wong appeared in the musical "白蛇‧青蛇". In 2006, collaborating for the first time with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Christopher Wong held "港樂 x 黃凱芹:一夜情弦音樂會" at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. In May 2008 the album "旅情" was released in Canada, with copies auctioned to raise money for charity; in May 2009 there were performances in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. In 2010 Christopher Wong returned to Hong Kong and held "黃凱芹好好的演唱會" at Star Hall, Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre; the album "变幻" was released on September 2, 2011; in 2012 a 25th-anniversary concert was held at the Hong Kong Coliseum; on March 28, 2013 "黄凯芹再遇伊利沙伯演唱会" was held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. In 2014 Christopher Wong signed with Neway Star for two years for the first time, because the company was willing to record in Canada.
Christopher Wong won again in episode five of the Pearl River Channel music contest "粤唱越响", broadcast on January 10, 2015, and released the album "辉黄时期" on September 25; at the Chinese Music Awards ceremony on November 25, 2016, that album won "年度最佳HIFI人声奖", and on December 24 the same year Christopher Wong held the "再遇经典" world tour at Guangzhou Gymnasium. On November 22, 2018, Christopher Wong and 蘇芮 held "苏芮&黄凯芹感恩演唱会" in Southern California; on December 15 the album "诗人说梦" won "十大华语唱片——粤语十大" at the Chinese Music Awards, and Christopher Wong won "年度最佳粤语男歌手". In May 2020 the PolyGram 50th-anniversary medley "Stars on PolyGram 50", which Christopher Wong helped record, was released.
After that Christopher Wong replaced 伍仲衡 and, with 陳奐仁, joined the judging panel of TVB's "中年好聲音3". Speaking of variety shows, Christopher Wong also said people on the mainland had sent invitations and that the matter was under consideration: "Because I have a tour to do, but if the timing fits, it really can happen."
