About the artist
Ekin Cheng, a Hong Kong male singer and actor, was born on October 4, 1967, and is nicknamed 伊麵. Ekin Cheng grew up in 樂民新村, To Kwa Wan, and was a neighbour of the artist 曾航生, attending in turn 聖公會聖匠小學, 聖德肋撒書院 (Form One to Form Three) and 香港大同中學 (Form Four to Form Five). Early after debuting, Ekin Cheng used Dior as the English name.
In 1986 Ekin Cheng entered the New Talent Singing Awards jointly held by TVB and Capital Artists. The Chinese Wikipedia gives two accounts of how Ekin Cheng entered the business. One says that before the contest Ekin Cheng had already joined TVB's 13th artist training class, and entered the business that way. The other says Ekin Cheng was not chosen in this contest, was discovered afterwards, and joined the 13th artist training class. The English Wikipedia says Ekin Cheng began filming advertisements in secondary school and, after graduating, first entered TVB's martial-arts training class, then transferred to the acting class because Ekin Cheng did not like it. Ekin Cheng also studied under 羅文. In 1987 Ekin Cheng filmed a first television series, "鐳射青春". When first in the business, Ekin Cheng was assigned as one of the hosts of the TVB children's programme "430穿梭機". Hosts in the same period included 譚玉瑛, 黎芷珊 and 黃智賢. In 1990 Ekin Cheng was moved to the drama unit, and after that appeared in many series, playing the male lead for the first time in "蜀山奇俠之仙侶奇緣".
In 1991 Ekin Cheng joined BMG Records. In 1992 Ekin Cheng debuted in music, and on June 3 released a first solo album, "不要哭了", winning "勁爆新晉靚人大獎" from "新城勁歌台" and Most Promising Newcomer (Bronze) at RTHK's 15th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards (for 1992). On April 29, 1993, the second album "撒哈拉" was released, and "勁歌台" gave "勁爆靚人大獎". When first debuting Ekin Cheng kept the hair short. When the third album "On Stage" came out in early 1994, the cover was shot with a long-haired image. The second lead single on the album is "一生愛你一個". That year Ekin Cheng played the male lead 包文龍 in the series "笑看風雲". On July 28 the fourth album "Got To Be Real" was released, and after that the fifth album "The Best Show".
In January 1995 Ekin Cheng held the solo concert "My Best Show" at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and the same year released an album of the same name. In March "直至消失天與地" was chosen among the gold songs of the first-quarter selection of TVB's Jade Solid Gold. On June 29 Ekin Cheng held a solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom for the first time, "鄭伊健真情夏日派對". In January 1996, at the RTHK Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards ceremony, Ekin Cheng won a Top Ten Outstanding Singers award, and "直至消失天與地" won Best Adapted Song. Ekin Cheng also won "最人氣急升男歌手" at Metro Radio's "香港勁爆流行頒獎典禮", and released "映畫館" MTV Karaoke and the "古惑仔" film soundtrack album. From 1996 to 2000 Ekin Cheng also released the EP "Life II" (1996) and the albums "The Best Show 2" (1997), "Senses" (1998), "Ekin Magic" (1999) and "Beautiful Life" (2000).
Ekin Cheng's first film was Girls Without Tomorrow 1992, in 1992, and the name used then was still Dior Cheng, later changed to Ekin. From the mid-1990s Ekin Cheng shifted the weight of the work toward film and singing, playing several characters from comics, including 陳浩南 in "古惑仔電影系列", directed by 劉偉強, 聶風 in the "風雲" series, and 華英雄 in "中華英雄". Ekin Cheng also starred in the "百份百感覺" films, adapted from romance comics for young people. Theme songs and advertising songs from Ekin Cheng's films include "友情歲月", "發現", "甘心替代你", "風雲", "天煞孤星" and "極速", and among them "友情歲月" won an RTHK Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs award. For "九龍冰室" Ekin Cheng was also nominated for Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Awards. In 2006, in order to film the long series "霍元甲", Ekin Cheng shaved off the long hair kept for many years. In July 2008, for the role of the alcoholic police inspector 黃督察 in "第一誡", Ekin Cheng won Best Leading Actor at the 12th Bucheon International Film Festival in South Korea, sharing the award with 余文樂.
In 2000 Ekin Cheng ended a ten-year working relationship with the former record company and moved to Emperor Entertainment Music, after that releasing the solo album "Myself", which contains ten new songs, including "一個人戀愛" and the follow-up lead single "迷戀". In 2002 the EP "JS精彩感覺" was released. In 2004 Ekin Cheng joined BMG, and the same year released the album "Discover". In 2005 Ekin Cheng joined BMA with the manager 林珊珊, and became a singer there. In September 2009 Ekin Cheng signed with Sony Music. Ekin Cheng had planned a comeback concert in Hong Kong from December 18 to 19, 2009, eleven years after the previous concert. In 2011 Ekin Cheng left Sony Music and at once appeared on a TVB programme. The same year the EP "Eternity", the album "偏愛你" and the live album "Beautiful Day 2011演唱會" were released.
The Chinese Wikipedia records that in 2013 Ekin Cheng registered a marriage with the actress 蒙嘉慧.
From November 7 to 10, 2013, Ekin Cheng held four shows of "歲月友情演唱會" at the Hong Kong Coliseum with Jordan Chan, Michael Tse, Chin Ka-lok and Jerry Lamb, and in 2015 a live album of the same name was released. In 2017 Ekin Cheng shot the Lunar New Year film "黃金兄弟" with Michael Tse, Jerry Lamb, Chin Ka-lok and Jordan Chan. From February 24 to March 1, 2019, Ekin Cheng held six concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum. From November 19 to 27, 2022, Ekin Cheng held nine more at the Hong Kong Coliseum, and this was also the first time Ekin Cheng held a concert with a three-sided stage. The same year Ekin Cheng appeared in the film "深宵閃避球", playing 劉志聰 (劉Sir). Ekin Cheng also received the Star Asia Award at the 24th New York Asian Film Festival. In 2026 Ekin Cheng plays the lead in the Netflix crime thriller Million-Follower Detective.
