About the artist
Faith Yang is a Taiwanese female singer born in Taipei on March 2, 1974. She moved with her family to Sydney, Australia, in fifth grade, began learning the flute while attending secondary school there, and participated in a musical theater workshop at the Sydney Opera House. She majored in genetics and biology after entering the University of Sydney.
Her interest in singing led Faith Yang to take a year away from school after her first year at university and return to Taiwan in search of career opportunities. When she first returned, she had not yet settled on a direction and worked and listened to music in bars or discos, while also modeling part-time; during this period, she met musicians including 李雨寰 and 林暐哲. Faith Yang's first collaboration with 李雨寰 and 林暐哲 was singing four songs for dMDM's debut album, "愛上你只是我的錯." 林暐哲 later discussed plans for a solo album with Faith Yang and signed with Magic Stone Records; after her year away, Faith Yang returned to Australia to continue her studies, completed her university coursework in 1996, and returned to Taiwan to prepare and record her solo album.
Her debut solo album, "One," was released on July 29, 1997. Her second album, "Silence," was released in September 1999 and was produced by 林暐哲, Chang Chen-yue, and 陳珊妮. Faith Yang won Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 11th Golden Melody Awards for "Silence." Her third solo album, "應該," was released in May 2001 and was again produced by 林暐哲.
Rock Records released "楊乃文第一張精選" in January 2004; it also included a solo version of "愛上你只是我的錯," a live version of "Fear," and her performance of "Moon River" for the television soundtrack "薰衣草." After joining 亞神音樂, Faith Yang released her fourth new album, "女爵," on December 1, 2006, serving as its producer and working with musicians including 李雨寰, 林暐哲, 陳珊妮, and 鍾成虎. The title track was written by Sodagreen lead vocalist 青峰 and marked their first collaboration; the album also covered "電視機" by the mainland Chinese band 便利商店.
The English-language album "Self-Selected 我自選" featured English songs Faith Yang had loved while growing up, with most of the older works newly arranged, and was produced by 陳珊妮. Sony Music released the album on April 10, 2009.
Her fifth Mandarin album, "ZERO," was released in December 2013, with rock as its main style, 王治平 as producer, and songwriters including 亂彈阿翔, Chang Chen-yue, 范曉萱, and Lala Hsu. For "ZERO," Faith Yang was nominated for Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 25th Golden Melody Awards in 2014, her first nomination for the award in 14 years.
Her sixth Mandarin album, "離心力," was released in November 2016 and marked the first time Faith Yang participated in every stage of an album, from song selection, arrangement, and production to mixing. In 2017, Faith Yang received her third Golden Melody Award nomination for Best Mandarin Female Singer for the album, while its title track was also nominated for Song of the Year, Best Composer, and Best Single Producer.
In September 2005, Faith Yang co-starred with Michael Wong and 趙文瑄 in 幾米's musical "幸運兒," playing the heroine Beatrice. On June 13, 2009, Faith Yang held her first solo performance at Taipei Arena. The "繆斯MUSE" concert tour ran from October 2022 to October 2024.
Faith Yang appeared on "蒙面唱將猜猜猜" in 2016. In February 2019, she joined "歌手2019" as a replacement singer.
Her seventh Mandarin album, "越美麗越看不見," was released on November 15, 2019, produced by 陳君豪 and 郭顶, with Lala Hsu, 韋禮安, 宋念宇, 许钧, and others contributing to its songwriting. With the album, Faith Yang received her fourth nomination for Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 31st Golden Melody Awards in 2020.
Faith Yang released "Flow" in 2023, her first album in four years. Its first single, "A Dream of Bonnie and Clyde," a collaboration between Faith Yang and JADE, was released on July 21. In 2024, Faith Yang received eight nominations at the 35th Golden Melody Awards for "Flow" and its song "墮落," including Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Mandarin Album, and Best Mandarin Female Singer. Discussing her identity as a singer, Faith Yang said she did not like switching between acting, hosting, and other work, but instead focused on music and finding songs and creations she wanted to express.
