About the artist

Gary Chaw is a Malaysian Chinese male singer-songwriter whose birth name is 曹佰豪. He was born in Kota Belud, Sabah, on July 9, 1979.

Gary Chaw's education took him to New Zealand: at age 15, he went to the University of Auckland to study civil engineering and returned to Malaysia after graduating. While in New Zealand, he had many friends who studied recording and were skilled at songwriting.

Songwriting preceded Gary Chaw's singing career, as he began writing songs at age 17. Aaron Kwok's 1999 EP "Ask For More" included three compositions by Gary Chaw, including "只有你." Discussing his motivation for writing, Gary Chaw said he began creating music because he wanted good songs to sing; in an interview with The Beijing News, he also described music as a language for expressing life and experience.

Gary Chaw released his debut album, "笑我笨," in 2001, along with the self-titled album "Gary" in Malaysia. That year, he sang "聽海," composed and arranged by 塗惠源, at a KTV venue in Singapore. The composer recognized his talent, leading him to Taiwan to develop his career and study.
