About the artist
Huang Fei is a Taiwanese female singer of Taiwanese-language music born in Kaohsiung on July 13, 1974. Her birth name is 黃子倩, and before changing her name she was known as 黃麗華. After studying cosmetology and hairdressing at vocational school, she worked at a beauty salon.
Huang Fei recalled that at age 17 she was still a shampoo assistant when her brother-in-law signed her up for a singing contest; Huang Fei performed 蔡秋鳳's "金包銀" and took first place. Before formally entering the music industry, Huang Fei released a cassette under the name "黃麗華."
灰姑娘音樂工作室 founder 吳坤龍 asked Huang Fei to sing the eponymous theme for the glove-puppetry character "非常女." The song was later included on the 1997 compilation "霹靂英雄大團圓" as its lead track. After hearing "非常女" on the compilation, 陳明章 searched widely for its singer and even placed notices in the four major newspapers seeking her, ultimately finding Huang Fei at a hair salon in Cijin, Kaohsiung. Only after the two met at a KTV venue and Huang Fei sang live did 陳明章 give "追追追" to Huang Fei. Huang Fei initially resisted singing "追追追" and even said, "This song isn't something a person can sing," but continued practicing with 陳明章's persistent encouragement. Huang Fei also considered abandoning singing because she had difficulty expressing herself and was afraid of appearing on television, but ultimately persevered with 陳明章's encouragement.
Her debut solo album, "台灣歌姬之非常女," was released in 2000, formally launching Huang Fei's career; "風塊哭" incorporated English into Taiwanese-language lyrics. 陳明章 produced the album, while "追追追" used a film-score-style production approach, with China Blue handling the arrangement and Wu Bai playing electric guitar. Huang Fei received a nomination for Best Dialect Female Vocalist at the 12th Golden Melody Awards for her debut record.
Her second album, "紅桃12," earned Huang Fei a second consecutive nomination for Best Dialect Female Vocalist, and her next release brought a third consecutive nomination. The 2006 album "紅" gave Huang Fei her fourth Golden Melody Award nomination and her first nomination for Best Taiwanese Album.
Huang Fei signed with 無非文化 in 2006, and many of her songs were used as ending themes for Pili glove-puppetry series. On "相思聲聲," Huang Fei covered the Taiwanese-language version of Sodagreen's "無眠," while Sodagreen covered "追追追"; "相思聲聲" brought Huang Fei her first Golden Melody Award.
After Huang Fei joined 華特國際音樂, the outlets for her work shifted from glove puppetry to local television dramas, and 華特 also encouraged her to try different types of music. Huang Fei was later nominated again for the Golden Melody Award for Best Taiwanese Female Singer with "無字天書" and won for the second time. The 2016 album "雙生花" contrasted a direct, colloquial lead track with the classically elegant style Huang Fei had previously sung and brought her another Golden Melody Award nomination.
The 2018 album "我若是黃倩倩" used a time-spanning production concept, employing the musical styles, lyrics and compositions, and vocal techniques of different eras to present the evolution of local Taiwanese-language songs. The album also included "顛倒歌," the first Mandarin song for which Huang Fei was the original singer, and marked the first time she recorded backing vocals for her own song. Huang Fei won Best Taiwanese Female Singer at the 35th Golden Melody Awards in 2024 for "十八般武藝."
In November 2017, Huang Fei, 王瑞霞, and 秀蘭瑪雅 performed "姬情台三線" together, the first ticketed concert of Huang Fei's singing career. In March 2019, Huang Fei performed with 隨性樂團 at "大港開唱."
Huang Fei appeared in the singer collaboration round of "大嘻哈時代" in 2021, partnering with 潤少 to reinterpret "追追追" in a hip-hop style. During Lunar New Year 2026, Huang Fei participated in "WE ARE我們的除夕夜," produced by 文化總會, collaborating with 卜學亮, 阿跨面, 草屯囝仔, and others on the opening performance and adapting multiple songs into Taiwanese-style rap.
At the Golden Melody Awards, Huang Fei served as a guest performer with 西卿 at the 13th awards ceremony in 2002; in addition to their own works, they sang the glove-puppetry song "苦海女神龍" together. At the 28th Golden Melody Awards in 2017, Huang Fei and four other nominated female singers performed 紀露霞's "望你早歸," after which she presented the award on their behalf; at the 34th Golden Melody Awards in 2023, she presented the Taiwanese-language category awards with 陳雷.
