About the artist
Jason Zhang, born in Chengdu, Sichuan, on December 20, 1982, is a Mainland Chinese male singer. In 2000, he enrolled at Sichuan Normal University to study hospitality and tourism, singing at local venues during that period to support himself with the income.
His professional singing career began with a televised talent competition: Jason Zhang debuted after competing in the first "我型我秀" in 2004 and released his debut album, "第一张", the following year. "週末報", in a report republished by Sina News, wrote that the 21-year-old entered the competition despite his parents' opposition and with his grandfather's support. Speaking about the album, Jason Zhang said, "I don't know whether anyone will like my album. If someone does, I'll go on to make a second one."
Returning to a talent competition after already releasing a record was a decision made under pressure. Jason Zhang competed in "2007快樂男聲" in 2007. He recalled anticipating many trials before entering and hesitating for a long time; on the night before the competition, he cried continuously and could not sleep. In the end, he still decided to sign up because, at the time, "there were hardly any opportunities to sing anymore."
Jason Zhang held his first solo concert in Beijing on May 1, 2008. Looking back, The Beijing News reported that the "闪耀星空" concert was held at the Beijing Exhibition Theater for an audience of about 3,000. When he released "这,就是爱" in 2010, he also developed "It's love 这就是爱" into an annual personal birthday-concert brand.
Jason Zhang subsequently competed in "我是歌手" and the 2017 program "歌手2017". People's Daily Online reported that he appeared on the former as its first replacement singer and placed third with "勿忘心安". On the latter program, CCTV.com called him the season's first "逆战歌手".
Overseas performances and a world tour followed in 2016. In February, the "Just For Star" music-sharing event, led and planned by Jason Zhang, was held at the United Artists Centre in Los Angeles, with David Foster and violinist Lindsey Stirling also performing. In July, "张杰2016“我想”世界巡回演唱会" opened at Beijing Workers' Stadium; the following May, the tour staged its first concert in the city at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
His own label was also established in 2016. On April 26, Jason Zhang announced the founding of "行星文化", launched the "我想" music project, and began collaborating with Linfair Records. Speaking about his creative state, he said, "My music at every stage has honestly reflected my state at that time, and right now I am at my most 'at ease,'" adding that he and Mr. 張 of Linfair had long been friends, often exchanged ideas about music, and saw eye to eye.
The business of "行星文化" includes artist management and music production. In its introduction to the label, the China Daily website also described Jason Zhang as a songwriter and music producer. The 2024 album "要得" brought these two roles together on one record: he participated throughout the songwriting and production process, drawing inspiration from Bashu culture, including Sichuan opera, teahouses, and work chants.
His public-interest music education project began in 2012. Jason Zhang founded "张杰音乐梦想教室", funding the construction of classrooms and donating musical instruments to schools that lacked music equipment. The China Population Welfare Foundation described the project as a public-interest model benefiting the cultural education of young people in areas with scarce music resources, with goals that included overcoming the limitations of traditional donations, breaking down barriers to educational resources, and providing sustainable assistance.
The tour experience was later brought to cinemas. "未·LIVE-“曜·北斗”巡回演唱会" opened in Suzhou in October 2021 and concluded in Beijing in August 2023; a Xinhuanet retrospective counted 23 performances in 13 cities and a total audience of more than 900,000. The film "张杰曜北斗巡回演唱会", featuring the three finale performances at Beijing's Bird's Nest, was released on December 20, 2024; Xinhuanet called it "the first Chinese-language concert film from the mainland."
Another tour continued to expand in 2024. An interview by Madame Figaro and The Paper stated that "未·LIVE—「开往1982」世界巡回演唱会" reached 15 cities nationwide that year and held 54 performances; Xinhuanet separately recorded that Jason Zhang performed eight consecutive shows at the Bird's Nest in early August of the same year.
The Bird's Nest dates were also described as a new record. According to an April 2026 report by the China Youth Daily app, 16 performances in 24 days made Jason Zhang the first singer in the world to hold 16 consecutive concerts at a single stadium; with a total of 28 performances at the Bird's Nest within one year, he also set a new world record for "annual performances by a solo artist at the Bird's Nest."
Speaking about his choices, Jason Zhang said, "But I am glad that I chose the right path. Through so much hardship and confusion, I always stayed true to myself, kept from going astray, and persevered."
