About the artist

Jay Chou (周杰倫), born January 18, 1979, is a male singer, composer and music producer from Taiwan. He also works in film as a writer, director, actor and producer.

He majored in piano and minored in cello in the music program of Tamkang Senior High School. In 1997, at a classmate's request, he served as the accompanist for the classmate's appearance on a TVBS-G talent show. The show's host, Jacky Wu (吳宗憲), took notice of him and signed him, which brought him into the music industry.

In 2000, Chou released his first solo album, “杰倫” (also known as “Jay”). The album blends R&B, hip-hop, classical music and “Chinese style” (中國風), and won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 12th Golden Melody Awards. By the end of that year, CoCo Lee had publicly praised him, and Jody Chiang and Shino Lin were planning to ask him to write songs for them.

His second album, “范特西” (2001), received ten nominations at the 13th Golden Melody Awards. It won Best Pop Vocal Album, and Chou won Best Composer for “愛在西元前” as well as Best Album Producer. From the same album, Vincent Fang (方文山) won Best Lyricist for “威廉古堡”, and 鍾興民 won Best Arranger for “雙截棍”.
