About the artist
Justin Lo is a Hong Kong singer and songwriter, original name 羅定偉, born on July 1, 1976 in New York, the United States; the stage name "側田" is taken from the Cantonese homophone of the English name Justin. Nationality is the United States; attended Washington State University in the United States and later transferred. In 1989 went to Seattle, the United States, to continue secondary school.
Was once a member of the Hong Kong Children's Choir and of primary- and secondary-school choirs, and from childhood took a strong interest in music. At six tried piano and composing on his own, at ten learned guitar. Wikipedia records that third uncle 羅尚正 (Ted Lo) is a well-known Hong Kong arranger, producer and jazz pianist. In 1981, composer 顧嘉煇 once asked Justin Lo and younger sister 羅定潔 to sing for a Barbie commercial.
After graduation worked as a web designer at Yahoo in Santa Clara, California. In the early return to Hong Kong once did freelance design, and several times made demo tapes and sent them to major record companies, but results were not as hoped. Until 2003, third uncle 羅尚正 introduced Justin Lo to composer and producer Mark Lui.
In 2005, before debut, Justin Lo provided backing vocals at Leo Ku's "勁歌金曲演唱會", and debuted that same year. The newcomer awards received at the end of the year at Hong Kong's four major media music awards include Ultimate Song Chart Best Male Newcomer Gold, Jade Solid Gold Most Popular Newcomer (Male) Gold and Metro I-Tech Hit Newcomer King, plus Metro Hit New-Generation Creative Singer, RoadShow Supreme Male Newcomer, SINA Music My Favourite Male Newcomer Gold and YAHOO! Search Popularity Award Music New Force. Also at the 28th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards received Outstanding Pop Singer, Top Ten Chinese Gold Song "好人" and Most Promising Newcomer (Male Singer) Gold.
Wikipedia records first taking Ultimate Song Chart Male Singer Bronze, becoming the first male singer who debuted in the twenty-first century to enter that award's top three, taking only one year from "best male newcomer" to the male-singer top three; the same entry attributes this to that year's concert performance, record sales and popularity, and records concurrently being one of the Metro Hit Male Singer top three.
Soon after debut held a solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum. At that time Justin Lo's own works were only the ten songs on the album "Justin"; Wikipedia records that outsiders generally had no high hopes for a newcomer opening at the Coliseum, and some questioned whether there were enough songs to sing; as a result tickets sold out in ten minutes, and the record company announced two extra shows of "芝華士側田Two Good Shows個人演唱會", held on April 18 and 19, 2006. The same article also records solo concerts held three times within four years of debut. Justin Lo personally handled the writing of more than half the songs on this album.
In 2006 the film theme "情歌", sung as lead, received multiple awards at that year's major awards ceremonies, and the concert separately received "我最喜愛演唱會" at the 2006 Sina Music Popularity Awards. In 2007, "男人KTV" received a top-ten song award at all of that year's four major Hong Kong music awards. In 2010 released the Cantonese album "我沒有變過 愛的習慣"; Wikipedia records that the leads "無限大", "合唱歌" and "愛的習慣" were widely popular, and that among the many singers who have collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Justin Lo is the most junior in years.
Offstage, Justin Lo once produced songs for Kelly Chen, and served as record producer on Janice Vidal's album "Day and Night", and also wrote the two songs "大雄" and "傷追人" for Leo Ku. In 2009 wrote songs for singers including 方力申, 蔡卓妍 and Hacken Lee, and received several singer-songwriter awards. "Kong" is included on the second album "No Protection", composed by Justin Lo and Mark Lui, arranged and produced by Mark Lui, lyrics by 林夕. Duets include 2007's "飛就飛" with Kary Ng, 2009's "中間人", the theme of the television drama "鹿鼎記", with Leo Ku, 2014's "行者", the theme of "使徒行者", with 劉浩龍, 2015's "出口", the theme of "以和為貴", with 李思捷, "密偈" with 梁家玉, "Grown Up Christmas List" with 王梓軒, and 2017's "天空之城" with Dough-Boy.
On January 5, 2012, Sing Tao Daily reported that Justin Lo joined East Asia Entertainment at a ten-million price; an East Asia spokesperson afterwards acknowledged that Justin Lo had joined East Asia, and would in 2012, together with former 金牌 comrades including Miriam Yeung and William So, return to the Hong Kong music scene. Before that, in 2011, Miriam Yeung invited Justin Lo as a guest at the third "Minor Classics" solo show; C AllStar, when receiving Group Gold at "叱咤流行榜頒獎典禮2011", sang Justin Lo's "命硬" and called for a speedy return.
When interviewed on August 8, 2017, recounted the origin of "450蚊": one night while singing live in a bar, jammed improvised, and "玩玩下" finished the song; on the same day also mentioned that in December of that year a concert would be held at the Coliseum.
On March 7, 2026, with 吳林峰, served as a special performing guest at Yoga Lin and 柳應廷's "Katch the Moment" concert at Kai Tak; the set included "Kong", "三十日", "好人", the new song "Old Boy" and "大雄" written for Leo Ku. After four singers sang Justin Lo's "男人KTV" together at the end, Justin Lo proposed forming a boy band.
