About the artist
Kay Huang is a Taiwanese female singer, actress, and music producer born in Yilan County on October 1, 1964. At her uncle's suggestion, she attended the experimental music class at Dunhua Elementary School and joined the Taipei Christian Children's Choir.
A singing competition in adolescence became one of Kay Huang's earliest public musical experiences. In 1979, the fourteen-year-old Huang entered the third Golden Rhyme Awards, forming a vocal group with 王文珍, 黃珊珊, and 張瑞薰 and winning an award; the four thus became known as "the Four Little Singers."
After joining Rock Records, Kay Huang began as an assistant, with daily tasks including cleaning tape heads, pouring tea, sending photographs for processing, packaging records, and delivering records to radio stations. After signing with Rock Records, she released her first solo album, "憂傷男孩," in 1986. Beyond her own singing, Huang also worked in lyric writing, composition, arrangement, instrumental performance, backing vocals, and production.
In addition to producing her own records, Kay Huang became more involved from the 1990s onward in records by singers including Michelle Pan, 趙傳, Wakin Chau, and Winnie Hsin, and helped produce work by 羅文. Looking back, Huang said her music career also involved seeking opportunities to write songs, learning at Rock Records, and founding the record company "友善的狗."
Kay Huang wrote the backing-vocal arrangement for "夢田" and later participated in Rock Records' ensemble song "快樂天堂."
Songwriting and singing brought Kay Huang multiple awards. She won Best Composer at the 24th Golden Melody Awards for "回味" and Best Singer-Songwriter at the 7th Golden Indie Music Awards for the album "初熟之物." In 2019, she received the Special Contribution Award at the 10th Golden Indie Music Awards.
Her film work included both acting and music. In 2017, Kay Huang appeared in "強尼·凱克" and "相愛相親"; "陌上開花," the theme song she wrote for the latter, was nominated for Best Original Film Song at the 54th Golden Horse Awards and the 37th Hong Kong Film Awards.
Television music programs involved Kay Huang behind the scenes as a judge and music director. Beginning in 2007, she served as a judge on "超級星光大道"; she judged "超級偶像9" in 2014 and served as vocal director on "聲入人心" in 2018.
Kay Huang also continued performing on stage and screen. She appeared in Greenray Theatre Company's "台北秀秀秀" in 1999 and its "人間條件-滿足心中缺憾的幸福快感" in 2001, and played 江麗美 in the 2009 television drama "那一年的幸福時光."
Her cross-media work extended to interactive art. In 2019, Kay Huang collaborated with HTC VIVE and Japanese contemporary artist Miwa Komatsu on the VR interactive artwork "祈禱"; the project took more than a year and was selected for the main VR competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival and for the Raindance Film Festival in the United Kingdom.
Work with music institutions and award juries formed another part of Kay Huang's later career. She was a final-round juror for the 51st Golden Horse Awards in 2014, jury chair for the 28th Golden Melody Awards in 2017, and jury chair for the Association of Music Workers in Taiwan's annual Top Ten Albums and Singles in 2018. On February 6, 2020, the Taipei City Government's Department of Cultural Affairs announced that Huang would become the inaugural chair of the Taipei Music Center.
