About the artist
Lang Lang is a mainland Chinese male pianist, born in Shenyang on June 14, 1982, born in an army camp.
Cartoon scores had a deep influence: through the Disney cartoon "Tom and Jerry" first heard Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody", and the first film score fallen in love with was the Disney cartoon "Snow White". Lang Lang has said that the first time of playing Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1" was at only nine. At thirteen took first place at the 2nd International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians held in Japan; the day after winning, father and teacher took Lang Lang to Disneyland.
At nine a father quit police work and moved with Lang Lang to Beijing to concentrate on piano; a mother stayed working in Shenyang, sending 150 US dollars a month for rent, tuition and meals. Once studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, then entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, studying with the director Gary Graffman. Graffman recalled the audition, calling the technique incredible, and said that even with eyes closed that communication could be felt. Lang Lang has said of almost giving up piano, punching a wall and injuring a hand, and not playing for several months.
In August 1999, at seventeen, at the Ravinia outdoor festival stepped in for André Watts, who was unwell, and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Christoph Eschenbach performed the first movement of Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1"; that piece was also the programme of the first album with the German label Deutsche Grammophon.
On May 20, 2004 in New York was appointed by UNICEF as its youngest goodwill ambassador.
In 2008 served as a Beijing Olympic torchbearer, and performed at the globally televised Beijing Olympics opening ceremony the same year; later also a torchbearer for London 2012 and Rio 2016.
In 2014 on the Grammy Awards ceremony shared the stage with Metallica.
In April 2017 a left-arm injury worsened, cancelling concerts for the following months, resting more than a year in all, and for a time being essentially unable to perform.
On December 9, 2016 SONY MUSIC issued "New York Rhapsody – Live from Lincoln Center" Blu-ray. On March 29, 2019 issued "Piano Book"; a limited double-CD edition was issued by DG on April 19 of the same year; the DG page said the disc was the first solo album in three years, and quoted Lang Lang that many of the pieces were the reason for wanting to become a pianist in the first place. On September 8, 2020 DG issued "Bach: Goldberg Variations" double CD. The label page said global streaming of "Piano Book" had accumulated over one billion.
Universal Records and Disney jointly issued the album "Lang Lang: The Disney Book", recorded at Disney's invitation to mark the hundredth anniversary, English title Lang Lang: The Disney Book. Disney concert production has toured since 2022 to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and New York, Paris and elsewhere. Lang Lang said the concert is based on classical music, uses Romantic technique, with arrangements centred on piano, and blends Impressionist, Romantic and other styles.
Held a concert at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, the programme Schumann's "Arabesque" and Bach's "Goldberg Variations", with no interval; said Bach's "Goldberg Variations" is like the Himalayas.
In 2024 served as a torchbearer for the Paris Olympics, and in December of the same year performed for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris.
Once went to the Zhongxiao branch of Taipei City Hospital to play Mozart and Tchaikovsky for people with ALS, fulfilling the Ice Bucket Challenge that Andy Lau had earlier named Lang Lang to take up.
Through giving masterclasses and founding the Lang Lang International Music Foundation has put effort into music education; a Deutsche Grammophon page said the educational efforts are led by the Lang Lang International Music Foundation.
