About the artist
Lowell Lo is a Hong Kong composer, film scorer, singer and actor, original name 盧國富, nicknamed "LoLo" and "盧盧", born on October 12, 1950. Birth father 盧海天 was a Cantonese-opera star; Lowell Lo was brought up by the grandmother as a child. Has said not knowing who the birth mother was; from childhood, arranged by the father, recognized 譚秀珍 — a Cantonese-opera star who could not bear children — as adoptive mother; the third paternal aunt was Cantonese-film star 白燕. Liberty Times records that Lowell Lo once admitted having no kin feeling toward the adoptive mother, but still greatly respected the father.
In early years attended the primary section of 嶺英中學 in Causeway Bay, then entered 嶺南中學, and at 16 moved to the United States, finishing high school at O'Dea High School. Around graduation sang in bars for eight years, in 1977 won the American Song Festival, and afterwards returned to Hong Kong to obtain eligibility for the World Popular Song Festival and to develop in Japan.
The return to Hong Kong did not go smoothly. Liberty Times records that the 1977 return was to enter a songwriting contest, with no selection for two consecutive years; although a record company signed and was willing to issue an album, Hong Kong then favoured Chinese-language music, while Lowell Lo preferred an English album, so the release plan came to nothing. Also once signed an English-album contract with Warner, but it was then the revival of Cantonese songs and the retreat of the English-song boom, and the album's release was shelved.
The turn came from a demo tape. Lowell Lo entrusted 盧業瑂 to send it to EMI; the original intent was for George Lam to record it; after hearing it, president 黃啟光 went directly to Lowell Lo to sign, and in 1983 the first album "天鳥" was released. The disc was jointly produced by Lowell Lo and 朱穗萍, all songs composed by Lowell Lo, taking a contemporary-folk line; the song "流浪歌手" relates to the busking years. Wikipedia separately records being said to deliver Cantonese songs in a Western vocal style, unlike the then-popular "字正腔圓" singing. At the end of the same year issued the second album "小鎮", the style defined as folk rock.
In 1983 married 唐書琛. Liberty Times records 唐書琛 as a capable helper in the career; many songs have music by Lowell Lo and lyrics by 唐書琛, including the debut "天鳥" and "一生所愛", and Leslie Cheung's "但願人長久". Lyrics of Lowell Lo's compositions were mostly handled by 唐書琛, occasionally also collaborating with lyricists such as 林振強, 鄭國江, 潘源良 and 劉卓輝.
In 1985 was used by new director 陳國熹, first starring in and scoring the film "1/2段情", and writing and singing "快樂老實人" and "世事何曾是絕對". In 1986 and 1988 released the albums "陪著你走" and "但願人長久" respectively; the largest difference from before was the addition of other composers' works and foreign-language covers. In 1986 sang the public-interest TV commercial song "蚌的啟示" with 區瑞強 and 關正杰.
From 1983 awards came densely: that year, with "天籟…星河傳說", received Best Chinese (Pop) Song at the 6th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards; the next year the 7th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs composition award; in 1986, with "最愛是誰", Best Chinese (Pop) Song at the 9th; in 1988, with "但願人長久", Best Chinese (Pop) Song at the 11th and that year's Jade Solid Gold Best Composition. In 1987, with the theme of the film "最愛", received Best Original Film Song at the 6th Hong Kong Film Awards; in 1988, with the score of "七小福", Best Original Music at the 25th Golden Horse Awards; in 1990, with "憑著愛", Best Original Film Song at the 9th Hong Kong Film Awards; in 1993, with "92黑玫瑰對黑玫瑰", nominated for Best Film Score at that year's Hong Kong Film Awards; in 2009, with "歲月輕狂", the theme of the film "歲月神偷", Best Original Film Song at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards. Liberty Times records twice receiving Best Film Score at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.
The theme music of the Hong Kong Film Awards also came from Lowell Lo's hand, first used at the 15th awards ceremony in 1996 and still used. Lowell Lo said the Film Awards association often faced financial pressure in the early years, so after receiving the invitation to write accepted no fee and wrote as a volunteer; only in the 2010s was copyright tax on that theme music received.
In 1991 signed a three-album contract with Rock Records, and with Jonathan Lee released the album "我(們)就是這樣", featuring mixed Mandarin–Cantonese duets such as the lead "如風往事". Liberty Times records that the disc was not well received, and this blow made Lowell Lo think of withdrawing. During the 1997 Asian financial crisis, film and advertising companies owed scoring fees, and with multiple chemical sensitivity, withdrew from music; afterwards opened a green-goods shop in Sai Kung and often spread environmental messages.
In 2015, approached by Universal Music, issued the new album "Beyond Imagination" after more than twenty years; collaborators included producer 葉廣權 and 劉賢德 in charge of Hi-fi monitoring. The disc was made to audiophile-disc specification, rearranging and performing more than ten original works, such as mixing "天鳥" and "天籟" into one, and bringing fingerstyle guitar into "一生所愛"; Wikipedia records a decent market response, becoming a gold record of 10,000 copies. In the same year received "新城勁爆殿堂歌手" at the Metro Hit Awards, and at Guangzhou's "音樂先鋒榜2015年度頒獎典禮" received the Best Album award jointly presented by twenty-four stations of the year and the music-scene contribution award.
In 2018 issued the album "Movie to Music", themed on scores written in the past for films such as "賭神" and "秋天的童話", many originally instrumental, this time given lyrics. In the same year received "CASH音樂成就大獎2018" at the 2018 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. In 2025 received the lifetime achievement award at the Chill Club chart yearly recommendation 24/25. On April 21, 2026, RTHK announced that Lowell Lo would receive the 47th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs highest honour, the Gold Needle Award, in recognition of contributions to the Hong Kong music scene. On April 24 received the award at the awards concert, presented by 周梁淑怡; Lowell Lo appeared in act five of "音樂劇場", playing and singing "但願人長久", "陪著你走" and "天鳥". RTHK assistant director of broadcasting (radio and programme planning) 葉冠霖 presented a calligraphy scroll in congratulations, the text excerpted from Lowell Lo's gold-song lyrics.
Soon after debut, with a beard look suggested by 朱穗萍, was noticed by film companies, and over the years appeared in many comedies; Liberty Times names the performances in "雞同鴨講" and "富貴逼人", and also 2010's "月滿軒尼詩" as 阿來's father and 2020's "熱血合唱團" as a school principal.
