About the artist

Lui Fong (English names David / Josh), a Hong Kong male singer and actor, was born on January 19, 1964, in Nanjing, Jiangsu, ancestral home Shanghai, and grew up in a squatter area in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong.

Lui Fong attended, in turn, 庇護十二學校 (graduated primary six in 1978), 雅各英文中學, 模範英文中學 and 香港基教書院 (graduated form five in 1983). In January 1983, close to finishing secondary school, Lui Fong was encouraged by classmates to enter "Sing星聲", a live programme of "歡樂今宵", and, because the Cantonese was not good enough, chose "我是中國人", a Mandarin song by the folk singer 張明敏, for the contest. 黎小田, a senior executive at Capital Artists, invited Lui Fong, on the strength of that performance, to enter the "第二屆新秀歌唱比賽", jointly held by TVB and Capital Artists in March the same year. While preparing, Lui Fong took a mother's advice and looked for a singing teacher, and on 黎小田's recommendation studied with 戴思聰, and later said that 黎小田 would always be regarded as the man who discovered him. Lui Fong won the championship (gold) with "我是中國人", and so entered the business, signing as a Capital Artists singer for seven years. In an interview with Yangcheng Evening News, Lui Fong recalled that the award was presented by Joseph Koo, and that the hands were shaking when the prize was received.
