About the artist
Patrick Lui (English name: Patrick Lui Yau Fai) is a Hong Kong male singer-songwriter, originally named 雷有暉, who was born in Hong Kong on February 16, 1966. Lui graduated from Tak Sun School, where he and actor 呂頌賢 were classmates in the morning session while in Primary Six in 1978; after primary school, he attended Yuk Choi Secondary School in Sai Ying Pun, sharing Form Four and Form Five classes with lyricist 因葵, before transferring to "格致英文書院" in Tsim Sha Tsui for matriculation studies. In 1978, Lui and 雷有曜 entered an RTHK amateur singing competition under the name "Twin Brothers" and won the championship with the original song "Just Fancy."
In 1979, Lui formed the band Trinity with his elder brother 雷有曜 and 鄧建明, and the group won an RTHK singing competition; among the members through 1982, Lui was the drummer. While still in school in 1982, Lui substituted for his elder brother 雷有曜 on the backing-vocal recording of "愛定你一個," the theme song for the drama "播音人"; he subsequently began singing backing vocals for concerts and for song recordings by "永恆唱片," among other work. One of his earlier backing-vocal engagements was for a Danny Chan concert, an opportunity introduced by 徐日勤. That same year, Lui sang lead on "落日" and "背影" for the "永恆唱片" compilation "身在FOLK中," and played a classmate of 李祖全 in the RTHK drama "屋簷下之阿媽的兒子." Trinity performed at Academic Community Hall on October 8, 1982; two years later, member 鄧祖德, noting the groups' similar musical direction, proposed merging Trinity with the band formed by 朱翰博, 盛旦華, 劉賢德, and 唐奕聰, creating 太極.
太極 was formed on October 15, 1984, with Lui and his elder brother 雷有曜 as lead vocalists. In 1985, 太極 saw a poster at Tom Lee Music and entered the first Carlsberg Pop Music Festival, winning the overall championship with "暴風紅唇" as well as the festival's Best Original Song Award and Most Outstanding Stage Presence Award; Lui composed, wrote the lyrics to, and arranged "暴風紅唇." 太極 released its first Cantonese album, "紅色跑車," through "小音樂唱片," and won the Most Promising Newcomer Gold Award at the ninth Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. In 1987, Lui sang backing vocals for Alan Tam's "87與你情不變演唱會" and thereafter became a regular backing vocalist for Tam, Hacken Lee, and other singers. He scored the film "五虎將之決裂" in 1991. After 太極 released the album "utopia" in 1995, Lui began shifting to behind-the-scenes music work.
In 1999, 太極 temporarily reunited for a 15th-anniversary concert, attended and performed in by both Lui and former member 雷有曜. The Chinese Wikipedia states that Lui married 容美蓮 in 2000.
In 2001, Lui and 雷有曜 formed the band 南極 and released its self-titled debut album. In 2005, 太極 temporarily reunited again for a 20th-anniversary concert, with both Lui brothers among the performers; that year, Lui released his debut solo album, "Starting Over." In 2007, he began teaching popular-music vocals at "伯樂音樂學院," founded by 伍樂城. In 2009, Lui composed, arranged, and produced Eason Chan's "一個旅人." In 2012, to celebrate 25 years in the industry, 太極 announced that it would hold a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum on May 4. 太極 also held "Band of the Town演唱會" at the Hong Kong Coliseum, with guests including George Lam, Alan Tam, and Grasshopper; the younger bands RubberBand and Mr. also performed at the same show.
Lui's other screen appearances include the 2012 film "起勢搖滾" (as himself), the HKTV drama "第二人生" (as 何展豪), and the 2023 ViuTV series "極度俏郎君."
In 2020, Lui held his first solo concert, "PAT Music Over Rainbow"; Mad Company released the album "二十才前" on February 16, 2022; in 2025, he served as one of the judges on the first season of "聲秀."
