About the artist
Paul Wong (English name Paul Wong Koon Chung) is a Hong Kong male singer, musician, songwriter, and producer. Born on March 31, 1964, he is the lead guitarist of the rock band Beyond.
Paul Wong lived in Kowloon City in his early years and loved drawing from childhood, once aspiring to become a painter. He attended Methodist School in King's Park and graduated in 1976 from the afternoon section of Tung Koon District Society School in To Kwa Wan; director 葉偉信 was in the same graduating class, and Wong won an art competition while at the school.
After graduating from Lee Kau Yan Memorial School in San Po Kong, Paul Wong studied design at Hong Kong Polytechnic. During this period, drummer Yip Sai Wing introduced him to Wong Ka Kui and the others, and he handled design work for Beyond's first concert before later becoming a member of the band; a manuscript featured in the Chung Hwa Book Company online bookstore likewise says that Paul Wong joined Beyond later. A retrospective in the South China Morning Post, quoting the newspaper's entertainment editor, instead says that Wong Ka Kui, Wong Ka Keung, Yip Sai Wing, and Paul Wong formed Beyond in 1983. Having worked as a designer at an advertising company, Paul Wong not only played guitar but also frequently handled the band's visual work, including the cassette cover design for "再見理想" and the costume design for the 1991 "生命接觸演唱會."
In 1988, Paul Wong began singing lead on some songs with Beyond's album "現代舞台"; the band also released "秘密警察" that year, on which he sang lead on "大地." In 1989, Paul Wong recorded the duet "未平復的心" with Faye Wong. In 1990, "俾面派對," with lyrics by Paul Wong and music by Wong Ka Kui, received a prize at the 13th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. Paul Wong also appeared in several television series, including "Two of a Kind," in which he and Hacken Lee shared the leading roles. According to the Chinese Wikipedia, while Beyond was developing its career in Japan, Paul Wong said that he wanted to concentrate on playing guitar, so his singing parts were comparatively reduced. After Wong Ka Kui died in an accident on June 30, 1993, Paul Wong and the band's bassist, Wong Ka Keung, assumed the role of Beyond's lead vocalists and continued releasing music under the band's name; they also became its principal songwriters.
Works Paul Wong composed, arranged, and produced for other singers included "自尋煩惱" (1997), "所有人是傻" (2000), and "馬龍白蘭度" (2004). He also established the production company Polar Bear Production Co., composing and producing songs for other singers. His collaborators included Andy Lau, Hacken Lee, Andy Hui, Jordan Chan, Jan Lamb, Karen Mok, 梁詠琪, 何超儀, Softhard, and LMF, and he also wrote lyrics for the emerging bands Soler and Tatflip.
During Beyond's hiatus at the end of 1999, Paul Wong began his solo singing career and formed the band Hann with Jun Kung, LMF member Mak Man Wai, and Dino Acconci of Soler. Beyond announced in 1999 that its members would pursue individual careers, briefly reunited for its 20th anniversary in 2003, and formally disbanded in 2005. In 2000, Paul Wong played the lead role of Tony in Theatre Space's musical "The Dream Broken in Victoria Harbour," an adaptation of the Broadway musical "West Side Story" with its setting moved to Hong Kong. He subsequently established Polar Bear Studio, signed with Universal Music, released the Cantonese album "Yellow Paul Wong" in January 2001, and followed it with "Black White" that same year; for these two albums, Paul Wong received the Singer-songwriter Gold Award at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation in both 2001 and 2002.
The EP "同根" was released in 2002. At a press conference, Paul Wong announced that his first solo concert was scheduled for November 5 at the Hong Kong Coliseum. His first solo concert, Play It Loud, was held there in November 2002.
In July 2004, Paul Wong released the album "我在存在" (I Now Exists) through EMI; its title song, "我在存在," won Best Alternative Work at the 2003/2004 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong. Before Beyond disbanded in 2005, Paul Wong held concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum as a member of the band and took part in Beyond's final world tour. He then served as music director of Commercial Radio Hong Kong's Sammy and Kitty Drama Group musical "亞卡比槍擊事件" and wrote songs for the production. In April 2006, Paul Wong signed with Warner Music China to expand into the mainland China market; in October, he held the solo concert "Paul Wong Hong Kong Concert 2006: The Music of Madman's Study" at the Hong Kong Coliseum, and that year released the EP "狂人習作."
On June 10, 2008, Paul Wong joined Wong Ka Keung, Yip Sai Wing, Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, the band 太極, and others at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for "別了家駒十五載 海闊天空音樂會"; the three former Beyond members performed together for the first time in three years, singing "海闊天空." In October 2011, he released the Cantonese and Mandarin album "A小調協奏曲" and received the Metro Hits Hall of Fame Rock Singer award at that year's Metro Radio Hits Music Awards. In 2012, Paul Wong received the "新城全球勁爆搖擺歌手" award, while "年少無知," which he composed, arranged, and produced, won Metro Hits My Favorite Song and the Ultimate Song Chart My Favorite Song Award for 2012. Paul Wong also held two solo "Paul Wong Rockestra" concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum, performing "年少無知," the ending song from "天與地," with 陳豪, 林保怡, and 黃德斌. According to the Chinese Wikipedia, Paul Wong married 朱茵 in 2012.
On January 18, 2013, Paul Wong appeared on the Hunan Television program "我是歌手" and subsequently performed with Yip Sai Wing at concerts in mainland China. That year, he played 大佬B in the film "古惑仔:江湖新秩序," and in 2014 he played 健豪 in "末日派對."
