About the artist
Priscilla Chan is a Hong Kong female singer, ancestral home Panyu, Guangdong, the eldest daughter of the family, with a younger sister one year younger and a younger brother ten years younger. Attended St. Paul's Kindergarten and Marymount Primary School, graduated from primary school in 1978, and once repeated Primary 3. For secondary school entered Maryknoll Convent School, then on Blue Pool Road in Happy Valley (now Marymount Secondary School), and was a Form 5 classmate of singer Sandy Lam. After finishing matriculation entered the English department of Hong Kong Baptist College.
From primary school took an active part in verse-speaking contests of the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, twice placing third in Chinese poetry solo, and in 1978 won the Form 1 girls' English solo championship. Also often entered school singing contests and performed at school socials, and was invited by the Diocesan Boys' School Old Boys' Association and the La Salle College students' union to sing at school.
In Form 5, musician Angus (麥偉珍) of 法安利製作公司 was preparing a girls' compilation, and Priscilla Chan was invited to a studio audition, singing "痴情夢醒" during the audition. Then signed with 法安利, and was arranged with 陳樂敏 and 黎芷珊 into the group "少女雜誌", recording a same-titled compilation; the disc was wholly produced by 法安利 and issued by PolyGram. In November 1983 the three debuted together, and on January 15, 1984 released the same-titled album "少女雜誌", becoming a solo singer with the debut work "逝去的諾言". The song reached No. 1 on RTHK's Chinese Songs Chart and was selected as a TVB quarterly gold song, and the album reached platinum. Then, on 法安利's recommendation, signed with PolyGram, which had originally only handled distribution, becoming a PolyGram contract singer.
In January 1985, Japan's Phonogram/PHILIPS simultaneously released the Japanese single "千年戀人" and a same-titled album issued under the name "少女雜誌". In 1986 法安利 reorganized as a management company; Priscilla Chan joined PolyGram and was arranged to work with producer 歐丁玉, releasing the album "反叛"; Wikipedia records that with a Japanese-style girl image and gold songs such as "跳舞街" the album put Priscilla Chan on the path of a first-line singer.
On July 25, 1989 released "永遠是你的朋友", of which "千千闋歌" was adapted from Masahiko Kondo's "夕焼けの歌", the same Japanese song as Anita Mui's "夕陽之歌". That year, with "千千闋歌", received RTHK Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs and TVB Jade Solid Gold, and at the Ultimate Song Chart awards received Commercial Radio Ultimate Song Chart Female Singer Bronze. Oriental Daily News records that the two songs of the same origin fought neck and neck at that year's Jade Solid Gold, with "夕陽之歌" finally taking the Gold Song Gold Award, and "千千闕歌" becoming Priscilla Chan's farewell work on leaving the music scene for a time. The paper on January 3, 2017 separately quoted former Emperor executive 吳雨 on a radio programme, saying both record companies competed to pull votes, and the grand award finally went to Anita Mui; contemporaneous reporting recorded that Priscilla Chan sold 350,000 records that year. Then held six first solo concerts named "幾時再見" at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
On February 9, 1990 formally left Hong Kong for Syracuse University to study psychology. Wikipedia in one place records graduating as a straight-A student at the end of 1994 and returning to Hong Kong, and in another place records graduating and returning in early 1995 then immediately resuming performing work; the same entry gives two time points. While studying abroad signed an agreement with PolyGram that every summer Priscilla Chan could return to Hong Kong to record, and in that period would not record with other companies; Priscilla Chan said this was because only 歐丁玉 was trusted to produce her own work. The 1992 album still sold triple platinum without the main publicity, and on it "紅茶館" received the 1992 RTHK Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs award.
On October 4, 1994 released the new-songs-plus-hits "今天的愛人是誰", reaching double platinum. In February and November 1995 released the two albums "Welcome Back" and "我不寂寞" respectively, the former selling quadruple platinum, 200,000 copies. At Lunar New Year 1996 held ten consecutive shows of "雪映美白演唱會" at the Coliseum, the first time since the 1989 farewell concerts, and also the most shows of any year, while releasing the new-songs-plus-hits disc "心滿意足". In the course of reopening the market, Wikipedia records that Jacky Cheung had by then become one of the heavyweight singers of the Chinese-language scene, and sang several songs with Priscilla Chan, including "夜半輕私語" and "愛和承諾".
In 1997 turned lower-profile, once publicly said would compete less for music-scene awards, and thereafter no longer attended year-end grand-selection awards, concentrating the whole year on releasing the Mandarin disc "心就要飛了" in Taiwan. In 1998 released the concept album "愛戀二千小時", ten songs written around the plot of a love novel, and in the same year was invited to sing the 17th Hong Kong Film Awards theme song "因你才有這一天". Wikipedia separately records that in that year Priscilla Chan felt unfairly treated by PolyGram. In May 1999 released "正視愛", first using producer 方樹梁, taking a Band Sound electronic-music line. In September 2000 released the last album at 新藝寶, "為你好", partly returning to the style of the 1980s and 1990s, and using new writers including 彭海桐 and 林一峰.
The 2003 comeback album "情意結" did not sell as expected, and afterwards faded from the Hong Kong music scene again. In 2007 collaborated with International Entertainment Limited, and in July announced a return to the music scene. On April 16, 2013 returned to Universal Music on a three-year contract, and Universal specially reopened the PolyGram brand for this; Oriental Daily News records Priscilla Chan as the first female singer to join after Universal reopened "寶麗金".
In March 2016 held "陳慧嫻Priscilla-ism演唱會", increased from two shows to four and all packed, inviting Alan Tam, Hacken Lee, 鍾鎮濤, Andy Hui and Grasshopper as guests. On November 3, 2021 took part in "寶麗金50周年演唱會" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, singing "流離所愛", "跳舞街", "逝去的諾言", "痴情意外" and "夜機" among others.
In 2022 moved to Emperor Entertainment, and in September of the same year announced joining season 4 of "中國夢之聲·我們的歌". On August 12, 2023 served as a judge on the TVB singing talent show "中年好聲音2", and on November 19 of the same year attended TVB's "萬千星輝賀台慶2023" as a performing guest. In November 2024 served as a flying guest on the Mango TV music reality show "聲生不息·大灣區季", singing "講不出再見" with Alan Tam, and singing "千千闋歌" and "夕陽之歌" in memory of Anita Mui. In the same year released the new song "給親愛的親愛"; Ming Pao quoted Priscilla Chan as saying this was the first song after joining Emperor Entertainment; on December 22, a fortieth-anniversary concert announced an extra show. In 2025 held the fortieth-anniversary concert "The Fabulous 40 Priscilla LIVE IN HONG KONG".
PolyGram once announced that Priscilla Chan's records had cumulatively sold more than ten million copies.
