About the artist
Samantha Lam (English name Samantha Lam Chi Mei), a Hong Kong female singer-songwriter, was born on April 9, 1963, grew up in Kowloon City, and attended Munsang College Primary School and Munsang College.
In secondary school Samantha Lam entered a folk-song contest the school held, and later formed the band "Delta" with two boys (one member was the folk singer 楊國華). A senior executive at a record company urged Samantha Lam to sign and release records. Samantha Lam also wrote campus folk songs. Early on, Samantha Lam and the folk band Delta won a singing-contest championship, and won a merit award at the RTHK urban folk contest. In 1981 Samantha Lam's "晨曦", "歸途" and "望鄉" were included on the compilation "香港城市民歌". In 1982 "風箏" and "孤想" were included on the compilation "香港城市民歌Encore", and "愛的火花", a duet with 蔡楓華, was included on 蔡楓華's solo album "人之初". The same year Samantha Lam signed with CBS/Sony (the predecessor of Sony Music).
In 1982 RTHK chose Samantha Lam's "感情的段落" as one of the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs for 1981–82, and that year Samantha Lam also won the gold-song newcomer award of RTHK's Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs. "感情的段落" was later included on the first solo album, "林志美", released in 1983. The album also has "你的眼神", a Cantonese cover by Samantha Lam of a Mandarin song. "偶遇", sung by Samantha Lam, is the theme of the 1984 film "少女日記". Between 1984 and 1985 RTHK chose it as one of the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs for 1983–84. It placed seventh at the TVB Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards Presentation, and won Best Film Song at the 4th Hong Kong Film Awards. This was not an award in a personal name. On the Hong Kong Film Awards list the song is credited to composer 李雅桑, lyricist 鄭國江 and singer Samantha Lam. Samantha Lam also sang a Mandarin version of the song for the 1984 self-titled album "偶遇", and the same year released the album "甚麼是緣份".
In 1985 Samantha Lam released the album "愛情幻像", and in 1986 "雨夜鋼琴". The same year Samantha Lam hosted the TVB programme "K-100". In 1987 and 1988 there were also the albums "灑脫" and "永遠動聽". In 1989, after the Sony contract ended, Samantha Lam left the front of the stage, and in February of the same year signed a management contract with 恆星娛樂, because seven years at the record company had passed and Samantha Lam wanted to look for other chances to develop.
In the 1990s Samantha Lam approached companies in mainland China and in Japan about releasing an album, but it did not happen, because Samantha Lam felt the listeners' tastes in the two places were different. Samantha Lam also spent more time composing for different singers, and worked as a producer as well. In 1996 Samantha Lam once appeared and sang at a concert of 梁詠琪.
In 2003 Samantha Lam returned to the music scene, covering "愛自己", which Samantha Lam composed and 梁詠琪 originally sang, and the same year released the album "當林志美遇上鮑比達". In 2004 Samantha Lam sang the theme and an insert song for the gospel film "天作之盒". The songs were included on "天作之盒電影原聲大碟", and in the film Samantha Lam had a cameo as a doctor's colleague. Samantha Lam has also sung many gospel songs, such as "愛是不保留". In 2006 the album "原美主義" was released. From February 1 to 4, 2009, Samantha Lam performed in the musical "星光大道" at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, playing 葉蕾欣, and sang the title theme. The same year the album "Moment to Moment" was released. Samantha Lam has also appeared in the stage play "麗花皇宮2012".
On February 7, 2015, Samantha Lam held "Timeless Samantha's Live 2015 林志美音樂會" at the Lyric Theatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The guests were C AllStar and Jay Fung, and the music director was 杜自持. The same year the live album "Timeless" was released. In 2016 Samantha Lam, 陳秋霞 and 彭羚 sang "光與生命", the theme for the 90th anniversary of Munsang College.
