About the artist
S.H.E is a Taiwan girl group, formed by Selina (Selina Jen), Hebe (Hebe Tien) and Ella (Ella Chen); the group name is taken from the first letters of the three members' English names. In 2000 the three separately entered the talent contest "宇宙2000實力美少女爭霸戰", jointly presented by 宇宙唱片 (predecessor of HIM) and the cruel-stage segment of CTV's "電視大國民". The record company originally planned to pick only the champion, then after the contest called back seven contestants for auditions, and only after internal discussion decided to sign the three and form a group.
The positioning the company first gave the group and members advertised that the three had high, mid and low vocal lines and three personalities, and could be "boys' girlfriends, girls' good friends". When the group was formally formed Selina was still at university, Hebe in senior high, Ella at a five-year junior college, and the three used holiday gaps to go to Taipei to record and train. From the training period through the early debut, the company arranged for the three to live in a dormitory, living, working and promoting together.
On September 11, 2001 released the first studio album "女生宿舍"; the lead single "戀人未滿" is an R&B-style work, a cover of Destiny's Child's "Brown Eyes". Wikipedia records that the song made the three famous overnight, and is S.H.E's debut signature, and also records that "女生宿舍" sold about 170,000 copies in Taiwan and about 750,000 across Asia, and in March of the following year with that disc was nominated for Best New Artist at the 13th Golden Melody Awards.
On August 5, 2002 released the third studio album "美麗新世界", and on the 24th of the same month held the N-age "美麗新世界" concert in the square in front of Tainan City Hall, the first large non-ticketed concert since debut. On January 23, 2003 issued the fourth album, also the first new-songs-plus-hits, "Together 新歌+精選"; Wikipedia records it as a work bidding farewell to the old image, and also records that "美麗新世界" sold about 300,000 copies in Taiwan and about 1.76 million across Asia. In August 2003, with "美麗新世界", received Best Vocal Group at the 14th Golden Melody Awards, and on the 22nd of the same month released the fifth album "Super Star". The same-titled lead of "Super Star" was produced in a Germany–Taiwan collaboration, a rock-style work. In May 2004, with that disc, was again nominated for Best Vocal Group at the 15th Golden Melody Awards, and was invited for the first time as a ceremony performing guest. From September 4 of the same year, the first large tour "奇幻樂園演唱會" opened at Taipei Municipal Stadium, the first time a large ticketed concert had been held since debut.
The 2005 album "不想長大" was selected by the Chinese Musicians Exchange Association as a recommended album of that year. Part of the melody of the first same-titled lead "不想長大" was taken from Mozart's Symphony No. 40. On September 28 of the same year issued the soundtrack of the television drama "真命天女", in which the three jointly played the female leads, including besides the theme "星光" also works sung by members individually. On September 10, 2006, the day before the fifth anniversary of debut, held the fifth-anniversary gathering "當我們同在一起". In 2008 served as performing guests at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, the torch-relay city celebrations before the opening, and the closing ceremony, singing the Olympic song "紅遍全球".
On May 29, 2010 returned to Taiwan and held the Taipei date of "愛而為一世界巡迴演唱會" at Taipei Arena, in "flagship show" form. The live video album of that show later received an IFPI Hong Kong record-sales award. The album "SHERO" was nominated for Best Vocal Group at the 22nd Golden Melody Awards, and Hebe Tien's solo work "To Hebe" was also nominated in four categories that edition. On June 23, 2012 served as a performing guest at the 23rd Golden Melody Awards and announced a return, singing "SHERO" and "Super Star". On November 16 of the same year released the thirteenth album "花又開好了"; the first same-titled lead is an electronic rock dance track, with the interlude weaving in the melodies of Für Elise and Flight of the Bumblebee.
On June 22, 2013 opened a large tour; tickets for the two Taipei shows sold out in about three hours. On July 19 and August 9 and 10, 2014, "2gether 4ever世界巡迴演唱會" returned to Taiwan, holding three shows in all in Kaohsiung and Taipei. Wikipedia records that tour's Taiwan dates as four in Taipei and one in Kaohsiung, setting the record for the most shows in a single tour by a Taiwan group, and also records that from 2004 to 2014 S.H.E cumulatively held more than fifty world-tour ticketed concerts, with attendance passing one million.
Outside group schedules, on March 30, 2010 Hebe held a charity-nature solo birthday concert named "330音樂 田" at The Wall in Taipei. In April 2013 Selina took the hosting baton of "小宇宙33號", and in the same month Ella took "王子的約會" as host. In 2014 Selina and Ella respectively hosted the 49th Golden Bell Awards and the 51st Golden Horse Awards, and Ella was also nominated with 庾澄慶 for Best Variety-Show Host at the 49th Golden Bell Awards for "王子的約會".
The three's move from singing to writing advanced album by album. On the eighth album "不想長大", released November 25, 2005, S.H.E first served as vocal producer for the album track "神槍手", and Selina first wrote English lyrics for "星星之火". The tenth album "Play", released May 11, 2007, took "play" as its concept; on this album the three published their own writing, Selina and Ella further trying lyrics and composition, writing "老婆" describing the members' feelings for one another (lyrics by Selina, music by Ella), and Hebe also wrote lyrics for the first time for "說你愛我". The eleventh album "我的電臺FM S.H.E", released September 23, 2008, took a radio station as its concept; during promotion they founded the internet radio "FM S.H.E" with the three as DJs, the station song composed by Ella. In March 2016 collaborated a second time with Japanese photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa, shooting the key visual for her touring exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei.
On September 11, 2018 held "十七音樂會" at the National Theater and Concert Hall arts plaza, the first public singing in Taiwan in two years, singing from the first debut song "戀人未滿" through "十七", and greeting fans with the debut greeting. On the 30th of the same month the contract with HIM International Music expired; the three did not renew and each announced forming their own companies. The group did not disband, but "S.H.E" is a registered trademark of HIM, and the group name and song copyrights all belong to HIM. On June 29, 2019, the 2018 single "十七" received dual nominations at the 30th Golden Melody Awards for Song of the Year and Best Music Video, and the three appeared together at that ceremony.
In January 2019 the three appeared together at a self-hosted year-end party "弱勢家庭公益同樂會", eating the year-end meal with children and donating funds. On August 11, 2023, after four years, the three again appeared together in public without warning: Selina and Ella were invited as guests at the Taipei final of Hebe's solo "一一巡迴演唱會". Wikipedia records that S.H.E's album sales since debut have accumulated to more than 16 million copies worldwide, once ranking seventh in worldwide girl-group album sales.
