About the artist
Shunza, whose real name is 倪莲春, is a Mainland Chinese female singer-songwriter and music producer. She was born in Beijing on February 12, 1973, and grew up in the United States. After studying classical piano from childhood, Shunza attended Hunter College of the City University of New York, the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, and studied music production at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Lausanne. After graduating in 1995, she was invited to teach at her alma mater.
Before formally releasing solo records, Shunza gained practical experience through bands and live performances. In 1992, she formed the band Duty Free and played more than a hundred live shows in the United States, Switzerland, France, Italy, Canada, and Austria. At the 1994 MIDEM music trade show in Cannes, Shunza's mother gave a demo tape to Rock Records, which was exhibiting there, prompting the company to take notice of Shunza. In 1996, she signed with Magic Stone Records, a Rock Records subsidiary, and went to Taiwan to develop her career.
Before releasing her album in 1997, Shunza took part in six Taiwan campus tour concerts titled "诞生前夕," organized by Magic Stone Records. Her debut album of original material, "順子SHUNZA," was released in November 1997 and included the song "回家." Apple Music's artist introduction linked Shunza's musical background to the environment in which she grew up, noting the influence of blues, jazz, and R&B on her music.
Her second album of original material, "I'm Not A Star," was released in September 1998. Shunza won Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 10th Golden Melody Awards for the album and Best Composer for "寫一首歌 April 5, 1969."
Her record-label partnerships changed around the turn of the century. Shunza ended her contract with Magic Stone Records in 2000 and signed with EMI Taiwan. Released in May 2001, "...and music's there..." was the first album whose production she led independently. She subsequently released "Dear Shunza" in January 2002 and "我的朋友Betty Su" in April 2003. Shunza ended her contract with EMI Taiwan in September 2003.
Writing for other singers was also part of Shunza's studio work. In 2002, she composed music for 蕭亞軒's "問自己," 陶晶瑩's "不再想念," and aMEI's "聽見了嗎."
After moving to Seed Music, Shunza participated in producing the television soundtrack for "101次求婚" in 2004 and sang its theme song, "Only One." Her English-language album "Songs For Lovers," released in January 2006, reinterpreted ten jazz songs, including the French song "Les Yeux Ouverts."
Her public work on music programs also included judging. Shunza served twice as a judge on the Mainland Chinese program "超级女声" between 2005 and 2006, and judged "快乐女声" in 2009.
Addressing a period when she appeared less often in Taiwan, Shunza explained in an interview that her work focus had shifted to Mainland China, saying, "I didn't leave Taiwan; I've simply never lived in one place for 20 years." She also said that she had performed in different cities across Mainland China and had not forgotten that she was a singer who became famous in Taiwan.
The Golden Melody Awards stage became one of Shunza's later public performances. In 2024, she was invited to perform at the 35th Golden Melody Awards. A 2024 report noted that Shunza, then living in France, returned to Taipei Arena to sing "回家." Speaking about the performance, she said that she would continue writing songs and looked forward to releasing a new album.
