About the artist
Steve Chou (English name: Steve Chou Chuan-hsiung) is a Taiwan male singer-songwriter and music producer, born on June 7, 1969, in Shengang Township, Taichung County (now Shengang District, Taichung City). In 1988, Chou entered the industry after participating in a campus singing competition; he was initially selected for the first lineup of the Little Tigers, but withdrew after learning that the group's direction was modeled on Japanese idols.
In 1989, Chou released his first solo single, "塵煙," and the compilation album "無名小卒" under the name 小剛. The Chinese Wikipedia calls 小剛 a stage name, while a Sina Entertainment report quotes Chou as saying that it was a childhood nickname given to him by his parents because he often cried, in the hope that he would grow stronger. As for the release year of his debut solo album, "雙子星的對話," the same article's main text gives 1991, while MusicBrainz gives 1990; the albums "終於學會" and "捨不得你走" followed. He released the album "小剛的花花世界" in 1992. The 1993 album "陪著我一直到世界的盡頭" focused mainly on Chinese-style compositions, and several of its music videos were filmed in Xi'an, Xinjiang, and along the Silk Road; it was followed by the albums "發覺" (1994), "二分之一的愛情" and "心出發" (1995), and "我的心太亂" (1996), among others. In 1995, Chou played 北王 in the Ping-Fong Acting Troupe stage play "太平天國." Chou subsequently shifted among several songwriting styles and, amid changes in the market environment, clashed with his management company over their ideas; in 1997, he decided to go briefly to the United Kingdom to study the language and explore a new creative direction.
In 1998, Chou began releasing work under his real name. In 2000, at his company's invitation, he produced the album "Transfer," which contained 12 songs; released by Sony Music in December 2000, it was Chou's first collaboration with the label. Chou then temporarily suspended his singing career to concentrate on working as a producer. He wrote the album track "黃昏" after seeing a purplish-red sunset at Fisherman's Wharf in Tamsui; 報時光, part of United Daily News Group, states that "黃昏" was released in early 2000 and, although it was not the album's lead track, became popular in mainland China two years after its debut. Recalling the experience in a Sina.com report, Chou said that his first album under his real name, "Transfer," performed poorly and that he once thought he would never be a singer again; he was invited at the time to perform in Shenyang for a very small fee, and only when he heard "黃昏" on the city's icy streets did he learn that it was already popular across mainland China, giving his singing career a second beginning. In 2001, Chou played 小室敏雄 in the TTV and SET Metro drama "薰衣草."
In a Sina Entertainment report, Chou said that his company terminated his contract in 2000 and that he did not return until 2003, when he became a singer again. He released the album "我在身邊" in 2003; on July 9, 2004, he held the "我在身邊" concert at Singapore Indoor Stadium, with 許紹洋 as a guest, and that year released the live album "2004我在身邊新加坡演唱會" and the album "男人·海洋." Universal Music released the album "星空下的傳說," featuring "寂寞沙洲冷," on June 29, 2005. The albums "快樂練習曲" (2006) and "藍色土耳其" (2007) followed; in 2007, he served as a judge on the second season of "超級星光大道" and took 李千那 as a student. He released the album "微凉的记忆" in 2011 and "打扰爱情" in 2012; Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan released the album "時不知歸" on November 11, 2014.
Chou has also written songs for numerous singers, including Wakin Chau's "有沒有一首歌會讓你想起我," 那英's "出賣," Kelly Chen's "記事本," 阿杜's "哈囉," and 5566's "我難過."
The Shanghai stop of Chou's Timeless 2016 World Tour was held at Mercedes-Benz Arena on June 11, 2016. The Chinese Wikipedia states that in 2017, "青花," from the 2007 album "藍色土耳其," became popular on China's Douyin platform. On December 7, 2019, the "青花傳情" tour stopped at the Spring Cocoon Gymnasium of Shenzhen Bay Sports Center; that year, Chou also released the album "戀人創世紀." In February 2021, Chou was invited to appear on "天賜的聲音2," where he performed "我難過," a song he had previously written for 5566. On September 14, 2022, Linfair Records and "熊燚娱乐" released the album "念念不忘"; the "念念不忘" tour began at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai on May 6, 2023, and comprised 15 shows. Beginning on March 16, 2024, the 17-show "念念不忘·回响" tour visited Chengdu and other cities; that year, Chou also sang "That's Why You Go Away (中文版)" with Michael Learns To Rock, and Warner Music released the album "情人該有的慈悲" on December 5. Beginning on March 29, 2025, the 16-show "念念不忘·再遇见" tour visited Hangzhou and other cities. In 2026, Chou released the single "再遇見," and beginning on April 18, the "念念不忘·再遇见plus" tour visited Guiyang and other cities.
