About the artist
泰武古謠傳唱 is a Taiwanese Paiwan youth singing group whose members come from Taiwu Elementary School in Taiwu Township, Pingtung County, which also inspired the group's name. Under the musical direction of 查馬克·法拉屋, the students learn traditional Paiwan ballads through oral transmission. The members also collect old melodies from the Taiwu and Jiaxing communities, inviting tribal elders to sing them line by line, recording the original voices, and asking about the meaning of the lyrics.
In 2003, student Lumasan won first place in the national traditional-song solo competition; in 2004, five students formed the predecessor of the ancient ballads singing team under 查馬克's direction and were invited to perform in various places. The Taiwu Elementary School Ancient Ballads Singing Team was founded in 2005 and used a teaching method in which the teacher sang one line and the students repeated it. 泰武古謠傳唱 was formally established in 2006, and the group officially adopted its current name in 2013.
Early recordings include its participation in "祖靈天韻," a traditional music album released by the Pingtung County Government in 2005, and "唱一首好聽的歌," recorded in 2006. The latter was nominated for Best Indigenous Music Album at the 18th Golden Melody Awards.
The August 8 flood disaster forced the school and community to confront relocation. After 2009, Taiwu Elementary School moved in succession to the Jiaping branch campus, Taiwu Junior High School, and Jiaxing Village; at the end of August 2011, the permanent settlement of 吾拉魯滋 was established, and Taiwu Elementary School rebuilt its campus there. During the relocation of the village and school, the group continued to pass down traditional Paiwan ballads.
泰武古謠傳唱 traveled to four European countries for the first time in June 2009 and, beginning that same month, also performed in France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Japan, and mainland China.
In November 2010, 泰武古謠傳唱 recorded the innocent version of "快樂天堂" for Rock Records' 30th-anniversary album "快樂天堂 滾石30." In July 2011, Wind Music released the group's debut album, "歌開始的地方"; the work was nominated in five categories at the 23rd Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music and won Best Interpretation of Traditional Music.
The group released "歌,飛過群山" in August 2013 and joined Daniel Ho in releasing a physical album and holding a concert of the same name in North America. "歌,飛過群山" won Best Indigenous Language Album at the 25th Golden Melody Awards. "誰在vuvu家唱歌" took nearly seven years from song collection to recording and release, combining traditional ballads with musical styles including reggae and jazz, and won Best Crossover Music Album at the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music.
In 2015, the National Culture and Arts Foundation named 泰武古謠傳唱 one of the groups on "原住民表演藝術推廣平台"; in 2017, the group created a musical based on the traditional Paiwan story "太陽的女兒" and performed it at the National Theater and Concert Hall. In 2024, the group performed live at the opening press conference for "2024世界音樂節@臺灣."
