About the artist
Wong Ka Kui was a Hong Kong male rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. Born in Hong Kong on June 10, 1962, he died on June 30, 1993; his ancestral roots were in Taishan, Guangdong, and he lived with his family from childhood at So Uk Estate in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon. Wong Ka Kui was a founding member of the rock band Beyond and served as its composer, lyricist, rhythm guitarist, and lead vocalist; his stage name in Japan was Koma Wong.
Wong Ka Kui attended S.W.C.S. Chan Pak Sha School, Tsung Tsin Middle School's Tong Mi Road branch, and "博允英文中學." In junior secondary school, he was introduced to European and American music for the first time by a classmate and later became a fan of David Bowie and Pink Floyd; until the age of 17, Wong Ka Kui taught himself guitar on an acoustic instrument. After completing Form Five, he worked in jobs including office assistant, aluminum-window worker, hardware worker, air-conditioning technician, plumbing and electrical worker, television set builder, and insurance salesperson. Through an introduction by Yip Sai Wing, he worked as an insurance salesperson at "德高保險有限公司" in Sun Ning Building on Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, where his colleagues included 梁翹柏, who later became a Hong Kong musician.
Both the Wong Ka Kui and Beyond articles on the Chinese Wikipedia state that Wong Ka Kui met Yip Sai Wing through an introduction by the owner of Karin Musical Instruments in To Kwa Wan, then formed a band with 鄧煒謙 and 李榮潮 that became the prototype for Beyond; the two articles date this episode to 1981 and August 1980, respectively. A manuscript featured in the Chung Hwa Book Company online bookstore instead says that the music-store owner introduced 李榮潮 to Yip Sai Wing, and when the two arranged to meet at Karin Musical Instruments, 李榮潮 brought Wong Ka Kui and others with him that day, marking the first meeting between Yip Sai Wing and Wong Ka Kui. In 1983, Beyond was officially formed to enter a competition organized by "結他雜誌"; the band's name was chosen by its first lead guitarist, 鄧煒謙, to mean "surpassing" oneself.
In 1988, "大地" from the album "秘密警察" was named one of the Jade Solid Gold Best Ten, earning the band its first award from electronic media. In 1989, "真的愛你," composed by Wong Ka Kui with lyrics by 小美 as an expression of gratitude to mothers, was named one of the Jade Solid Gold Best Ten and received a prize at the 12th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. That year, "俾面派對," composed by Wong Ka Kui with lyrics by Paul Wong, received a prize at the 13th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. According to the English Wikipedia, the band visited Kenya in 1991, and Wong Ka Kui composed and wrote the lyrics to "Amani" for the album "猶豫"; "Amani" received a prize at the 14th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards, with both its music and lyrics by Wong. The film won Best Picture at the 12th Hong Kong Film Awards and also received Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for 廖啟智.
According to the Chinese Wikipedia, after the 1993 "我哋呀Unplugged" concert, Wong Ka Kui said, "Hong Kong has no music scene," criticizing the Hong Kong entertainment industry of the time for placing too much emphasis on singers' popularity while neglecting the development of the music scene. That May, the band returned to Hong Kong with the new album "樂與怒"; "海闊天空," composed and written by Wong Ka Kui, received a prize at the 16th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. The band's unplugged concerts in Hong Kong and Malaysia were Wong Ka Kui's final performances with Beyond. His last works were included on the Cantonese album "樂與怒" and Mandarin album "海闊天空."
In the early hours of June 24, 1993, Japan time, Beyond went to Fuji TV to record a game show to promote its forthcoming Japanese-language single "くちびるを奪いたい." Fifteen minutes into the game, an accident occurred: while running on the narrow, water-stained stage, Wong Ka Kui slipped and fell off the stage together with host Teruyoshi Uchimura.
