About the artist
Yip Sai Wing is a Hong Kong male singer and musician. Born on August 19, 1963, he is the drummer and a founding member of the rock band Beyond.
Yip Sai Wing attended Salesian School, Salesian English School, Islamic Dharwood Pau Memorial Secondary School, and New Method College. He encountered British rock music in secondary school and, encouraged by his school and family, began learning drums and playing in bands with friends. After completing sixth form at New Method College, he did not gain admission to university and entered the workforce, working as an insurance broker at "德高保險有限公司."
Yip Sai Wing met Wong Ka Kui at a music store, and the two became acquainted through their shared love of David Bowie; Yip played drums and Wong guitar, and they joined various bands together. A manuscript featured in the Chung Hwa Book Company online bookstore says that the music-store owner first introduced 李榮潮 to Yip Sai Wing, and when the two arranged to meet at Karin Musical Instruments in To Kwa Wan, 李榮潮 brought Wong Ka Kui and others with him that day, marking the first meeting between Yip Sai Wing and Wong Ka Kui. In 1983, to enter a band competition, Yip Sai Wing and Wong Ka Kui formally formed Beyond with two friends, 鄧煒謙, also known as 鄔林 and by the English name William, and 李榮潮; Yip was the drummer in the lineup. After several personnel changes, the band finally drew the attention of manager 陳健添 and entered Hong Kong's music scene once bassist Wong Ka Keung and lead guitarist Paul Wong had joined. In Beyond's early years, Yip Sai Wing was responsible for the band's contracts and finances; 鄧煒謙 later formed the band 高速啤機 with Yip and Paul Wong.
In Beyond's early years, Yip Sai Wing concentrated on percussion and backing vocals and rarely sang lead; only after lead vocalist Wong Ka Kui died in an accident in 1993 did Yip take on more lead vocals, singing songs including the Mandarin-language "LOVE," "無事無事," "崇拜," and "無助." The South China Morning Post reported that after Wong Ka Kui's death, the band members said they would continue. Yip Sai Wing also contributed lyrics within the band and played 林世榮 in the film "Beyond日記之莫欺少年窮."
At the end of 1999, Beyond announced a temporary disbandment so its members could pursue individual careers. Yip Sai Wing began his solo music career, formed a band with Beyond's first-generation guitarist 鄧煒謙 and others, started releasing solo albums, and took part in musical exchanges and performances on world tours as a drummer. According to Oriental Daily News, Yip said that each member had concentrated on making his own music from 2000 to 2003 and had grown personally and become more independent, making it harder for them to work together because their thinking differed considerably, so they decided to formally say farewell in 2005. In January 2001, he released the EP "美麗的時光機器"; that year he played 楊祖輝 in the film "烹屍之喪盡天良" and appeared in the "補習班" installment of the TVB series "廉政追擊." Yip Sai Wing began developing his career in mainland China in 2002 and released "Remember You" in August 2003. Beyond won Best Original Film Song at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Awards for "長空," written by Yip Sai Wing and Wong Ka Keung. In 2004, Yip established the production and management company "大洋创艺" in mainland China; its roster of singers and bands once included 陈尚实, 九紫, formerly Zen, and Ever, among others.
In 2005, Yip Sai Wing received "港台地区最佳摇滚奖" at the Asia-Pacific Music Chart and released the album "葉子紅了" in mainland China that November. On March 28, 2006, he held a signing ceremony in Beijing and signed an artist contract with "飞乐唱片," shifting his career focus further toward mainland China. At the ceremony, Yip performed several songs from his new album and sang a duet with 杨臣刚; the lead single from "葉子紅了" was "从头来." That year, he also received "港台金曲奖" on the Sprite China Original Music Pop Chart.
On June 10, 2008, Yip Sai Wing took part in Wong Ka Keung's "別了家駒15載·海闊天空音樂會," singing "舊日的足跡" with Wong, performing "光輝歲月" solo, and playing and singing "海闊天空" with the members of Beyond. He released the album "慈悲" in 2009 and "比從前更愛你" in 2010, and played 畢家輝 in the 2011 film "開心魔法." According to the Chinese Wikipedia, Yip Sai Wing married 张伟铃 in Beijing on December 27, 2011. In 2012, he and the band EVER released the album "榮光十年," and that year he received "最佳摇滚歌手大奖" at the Music Pioneer Chart Awards Presentation.
According to the Chinese Wikipedia, when asked in 2013 about a concert marking Beyond's 30th anniversary, Yip Sai Wing stressed that Beyond had already disbanded and that he would not again share the stage with Paul Wong and Wong Ka Keung, so as to avoid creating the impression of a Beyond reunion and having it used for publicity.
On July 6, 2013, Yip Sai Wing held "薪火相傳演唱會" in Hong Kong. He released the album "引以為榮" in 2015 and held "引以为荣演唱会" in Beijing on September 20. On June 10, 2016, Yip took part in "延续家驹爱心演唱会" at KITEC in Hong Kong; on November 25, 2017, the Shenzhen stop of "黄贯中叶世荣冲动效应演唱会" was held. In 2021, he released the single "你中有我" and appeared in the television series "當愛情遇上科學家." From February 4 to 6, 2022, "葉世榮你中有我巡迴演唱會" was held in Singapore. In 2023, Yip attended Beyond's 40th-anniversary commemorative concert at Caritas House on Caine Road; that year he also released the Mandarin work "天寬海闊 你還有我," composed by Wong Ka Kui with lyrics by sinner, and sang the eponymous theme song for the Wong Ka Kui documentary "Because of You 真的相識過." Yip Sai Wing received "中国新音乐排行榜音乐终身成就奖" on the 2024 China New Music Chart. On September 5 and 6, 2026, "葉世榮你中有我巡迴演唱會" was held in Guangzhou.
