About the artist
Yisa Yu is a Mainland Chinese female singer born in Chengdu, Sichuan, on October 23, 1983, whose birth name is 郁英霞. She majored in English at the School of Foreign Languages, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, without professional music training. In February 2001, host 程前 selected her for the super-imitation segment of Beijing Television's "欢乐总动员."
Campus competitions formed part of Yisa Yu's early public singing experience: in August 2004, she won the Gold Award at CCTV's first National College Campus Singer Competition. In May 2005, the original song "梦回兰若寺," made with 杉籽伽, reached number three on the TOM Online Songs chart, and Yu also joined a national tour organized by TOM 玩乐吧.
Repeated talent competitions did not immediately bring a nationwide debut. Yisa Yu failed the Chengdu audition for "超级女声" in 2005; entering again in 2006, she moved to the Guangzhou division and reached the top twenty, but was eliminated after an audio failure during the round from twenty to ten. In 2008, she first competed under the stage name "Yisa Yu" in "绝对唱响," reaching the Chengdu division's top eight but not the national top thirty.
Work as a resident singer developed alongside competitions. After university, Yisa Yu worked at a real-estate company, resigned several months later, and began singing at bars in September 2006 after an introduction from a friend. She formed "可可乐团" with two men as lead vocalist and later performed at Chengdu's "莲花府邸" bar.
"快乐女声" was an important milestone before her official debut: Yisa Yu reached the national top four in the 2009 competition and ultimately placed fourth. After the competition, she signed with Rock Records on December 8 that year.
Before her official debut, Yisa Yu had recorded cover material, with "百乐门" and "茴香小酒馆" released in 2008; after the competition, the distributor also issued "郁音绕梁" from earlier recordings.
Recording for her first full-length solo album began in Taiwan in February 2010, and "蓝短裤" was released that May. The lead single "指望" later became an insert song for the Taiwanese television drama "犀利人妻."
Solo album releases continued over the next few years: her second solo album, "微加幸福," was released on June 30, 2011, and her third, "失恋事小," on August 23, 2012.
Film and television songs became part of Yisa Yu's work; in 2013, she sang the theme "时间煮雨" for the films "小时代" and "小时代2."
Later film and television songs included "最爱的人" in 2014, "问明月" in 2016, and "思慕" in 2017.
Recording contracts and television music programs formed another strand of her career. At a Beijing birthday concert on November 19, 2017, Yisa Yu announced that she had signed with HIM International Music, ending an eight-year contract with Rock Records. She later joined "歌手2018" as the season's final replacement singer. On June 12, 2020, she joined "乘风破浪的姐姐," later placing sixth in the final to become a group member and appearing in "姐姐的爱乐之程." In December 2021, she received "年度最佳内地女歌手" at the third Tencent Music Entertainment Awards.
Yisa Yu released her sixth solo album, "路过人间," in May 2019 and her seventh, "Dear Life," in 2022. "Dear Life" was selected among the 16th Freshmusic Awards' ten albums of the year, and in May 2023 Yu was nominated for Best Mandarin Female Singer at the 34th Golden Melody Awards for the album.
Yisa Yu first appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in February 2019, singing "新的天地" with 平安 and other singers. She returned in 2022 to sing "欢乐时光" with 朱一龙, 王俊凯, and 赵丽颖, and that February sang the Beijing Winter Olympics theme-slogan promotional song "一起向未来."
