About

Air Supply (Air Supply) is an Australian pop-rock and soft rock duo. The band was founded in 1975 by Graham Russell, who handles songwriting, guitar, and backing vocals, and Russell Hitchcock, the lead vocalist. The two met while performing in the Sydney production of the famous musical *Jesus Christ Superstar* and quickly established a partnership thanks to their highly complementary vocal styles.

The band’s musical style is primarily characterized by melodic Adult Contemporary. Their arrangements often feature an acoustic guitar and piano foundation, complemented by grand orchestral and string sections. In the choruses, Russell Hitchcock’s highly distinctive, soaring, and emotionally resonant tenor voice, combined with the duo’s precise vocal harmonies, creates a romantic and grand soundscape. This highly dramatic and catchy style of ballad rock forms the core sonic characteristic of their discography.

The 1980s marked the global peak of Air Supply’s recording career. Driven by Arista record company and legendary producer Clive Davis, the duo successfully broke into the mainstream music market in the United States and around the world. Singles such as “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” and “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” not only achieved repeated success on the Billboard charts, but their full-length physical albums also accumulated tens of millions of platinum sales.

It is particularly worth noting that Air Supply’s music has had an exceptionally enduring influence in the Asian market. Their works were widely introduced to radio stations and the audio-visual markets in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China during the 1980s and 1990s, serving as an introduction to Western pop ballads for an entire generation of Chinese-speaking listeners. Numerous Mandarin-speaking singers have covered or adapted their hit songs. Their extensive catalog of studio albums, compilations, and live concert video and audio recordings from across Asia constitutes a representative archive in the history of transnational pop music in the Asia-Pacific region.
