About

G.E.M. (short for Get Everybody Moving; real name G.E.M.; formerly known as Deng Shiying), was born on August 16, 1991, in Shanghai and grew up in Hong Kong. She is one of the most iconic female singer-songwriters in the contemporary Mandarin pop music scene. In 2008, at the age of just 16, G.E.M. signed with the independent label record labelHummingbird Music (Hummingbird Music) and officially debuted with her self-titled debut EP, *G.E.M.*

In the early days of her career in Hong Kong, G.E.M. quickly made a name for herself with the albums *18...* and *Xposed*. In the Hong Kong music scene, which at the time was dominated by traditional Hong Kong-style ballads and electronic dance music, she introduced R&B, soul, and pop rock—genres rich in American pop elements. She possesses an exceptional vocal range, with high notes characterized by a powerful, piercing quality and sustained explosive energy (often described by the media as “powerful lungs”), and she is deeply involved in writing the lyrics and composing the music for her own albums. This combination of a youthful idol image and hardcore songwriting and vocal prowess quickly earned her immense popularity in Hong Kong.

In 2014, G.E.M. reached a major turning point in her career. She participated in the phenomenon-level music variety show *I Am a Singer* (Season 2) on Hunan TV in mainland China. Through her challenging reinterpretations and performances of a series of classic Chinese and international hits on the show, she instantly captivated audiences across mainland China and the overseas Chinese community with her breathtaking live vocal prowess, achieving a quantum leap from “Hong Kong’s Rising Star” to “Top-Tier Diva of the Chinese-Speaking World.”

In terms of music production, G.E.M.’s album recordings have consistently maintained high-caliber international collaboration. During her time at Hummingbird Music, she formed a solid partnership with producer Lupo Groinig, releasing highly polished albums such as *New Heartbeat*. In 2019, following a contractual dispute with her former agency, she established her own independent studio and gained full creative control over her music. Her subsequent concept albums, *Skyscraper Zoo* and *Revelation*, demonstrated remarkable planning capabilities in terms of the complexity of their arrangements, the social commentary in their lyrics, and the visual coherence of their music videos, and they have repeatedly won major awards at the Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan.

Industry observers note that G.E.M.’s rise profoundly reflects the shift in media power within the Mandarin-language music industry in the late 2010s. She effectively broke away from the traditional model in which Hong Kong singers relied on local television media and the release of albums exclusively in Cantonese, reaching a massive audience across Greater China directly through high-profile music variety shows and streaming platforms. The multiple versions of her high-definition studio albums and digital master recordings serve as crucial case studies for examining the cross-regional explosion of contemporary Mandarin-language pop culture and the commercial evolution of independent singer-songwriters.
