About
Hacken Lee (Hacken Lee), born on December 6, 1967, in Hong Kong, is a legendary male singer in the Cantonese pop music scene, renowned for his exceptional vocal talent and enduring influence. In 1985, Hacken Lee participated in the Hong Kong 19 Districts Amateur Singing Competition (alongside the first-ever champion, Jacky Cheung, who also emerged from the same contest) and won the championship with his rendition of Alan Tam’s “Love in the Mist,” and was subsequently signed by PolyGram, officially entering the pop music industry.
In terms of vocal technique, Hacken Lee is widely recognized by the music industry in Hong Kong and Greater China as one of the most technically versatile singers with the most precise pitch. He possesses excellent breath control, a clear and penetrating mid-to-high register, and a resonant vocal style with exceptionally clear enunciation. This stable live performance—which sounds as if it were being played back from a studio recording (CD-quality)—has earned him the highest praise within the industry as a “flawless” singer. During his time at PolyGram, he released a series of slow, lyrical hits—including “Moonlit Serenade,” “Grand Hall Concert,” and “Deep, Deep, Deep”—that blended classical elements with pop arrangements, showcasing his exceptional technical mastery in handling complex melodies.
In 1992, the lead single “Red Sun,” for which he wrote the lyrics himself, was released. Adapted from a Japanese pop song, this upbeat track quickly swept across Greater China with its deeply inspirational lyrics and highly rhythmic melody, becoming one of the most iconic cultural symbols of its era in Cantonese pop culture. Throughout his subsequent career, Hacken Lee signed with various record label, including Starlight Records, Artistic Dynamics, Universal Music, and Emperor Entertainment Group. In the early 2000s, he formed the duo “Left Alan, Right Li” with legendary singer Alan Tam, launching a series of concert tours and compilation albums that achieved unprecedented commercial success, effectively revitalizing Hong Kong’s physical music and live performance markets, which were in a slump at the time.
In addition to traditional pop albums, Hacken Lee has also made significant contributions to the pursuit of high-fidelity recording. In 2001, he released the live album *Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra · Kevin Kwok Live*, accompanied by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, which achieved an exceptionally wide dynamic range in mixing and post-production. It was later mass-pressed onto SACD and audiophile vinyl and has long served as a reference-grade audio source for high-end audio testing in Hong Kong. Industry analysts consider Hacken Lee’s vast and uninterrupted discography to be a perfect example of the “idolization of talented artists” and “long-tail commercial value” within the Hong Kong pop music industry.
