About
Jan Lamb (Jan Lamb), born on January 28, 1967, in Hong Kong, is a male singer, radio DJ, and designer renowned for his cross-media creativity in the Cantonese pop music scene and Hong Kong’s subculture circles. In the late 1980s, while Jan Lamb and Ge Minhui were working as DJs at Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK), they formed “Soft and Hard Masters,” a rap group that revolutionized the Hong Kong music scene.
The emergence of Soft & Hard Masters marked an epoch-making revolution in Hong Kong’s pop music industry. In a music scene then dominated by adapted love songs, Jan Lamb and the group boldly introduced hip-hop, sampling techniques, and electronic dance music from Europe and the United States. On their classic album *The Soft and Hard Murder Case on Broadcast Road* (1993), Jan Lamb penned numerous Cantonese lyrics brimming with street-level humor and social satire. This album was not only a huge commercial success but also marked the official entry of Hong Kong’s local street culture and rap music into the mainstream physical album release scene.
During his solo career following the group’s disbandment, Jan Lamb continued to demonstrate exceptional independent music production skills. Drawing on his deep background in graphic design, his solo physical albums (such as *Taxi Qualified* and *Bit, Bit... Bit, Bit”) are often at the forefront of the industry in terms of packaging design and visual concepts. His musical style further blends French electronic music, chill-out, and modern rock arrangements. At the same time, he not only serves as the lead vocalist for his own projects but also writes lyrics and serves as artistic director for albums by mainstream superstars such as “Lin Gou,” Eason Chan (under his real name), and Miriam Yeung.
Beyond music, Jan Lamb is also a renowned Hong Kong stand-up comedian; his show series *Just Rambling* is consistently sold out and frequently features deep integration with live music performances, resulting in the release of multiple live albums. Pop culture researchers point out that Jan Lamb’s extensive catalog of physically released records—with their highly stylized visual designs—serves as an excellent cultural snapshot for exploring the cross-genre symbiosis between Hong Kong’s broadcast media, local humor culture, and Western electronic music trends.
