About
Jenny Tseng (Jenny Tseng), born on February 20, 1953, in Macau and raised in Taiwan, China, is one of the most accomplished vocalists and legendary female singers in the Chinese-language pop music scene. Of Chinese-Austrian descent, she was discovered in Taiwan in 1971. She made her official debut with her first solo album, *Heart Lake*, and gained immense popularity in Taiwan. In the late 1970s, she shifted the focus of her career to Hong Kong, where she reached the pinnacle of her career.
In terms of vocal performance, Jenny Tseng is hailed by the industry as having “iron lungs” and a “golden voice.” She possesses exceptional breath control and a rich, bright soprano timbre. Her singing not only retained the clear enunciation and rich emotional expression characteristic of traditional Mandarin-language era songs but also incorporated Western bel canto resonance techniques, enabling her to project her voice with remarkable power even when performing pieces accompanied by large orchestral ensembles. In 1983, she dueted with Lo Wan on the theme songs for the TVB wuxia drama *The Legend of the Condor Heroes* (such as “Iron Blood, Red Heart” and “You Are Always the Best in This World”) . Composed by Joseph Koo and with lyrics by James Wong Jim, these songs perfectly showcase Jenny Tseng’s exceptional skill in handling grand, and full of martial spirit, becoming an unrivaled classic of wuxia music in the Chinese-speaking world.
In record production and distribution, Jenny Tseng also demonstrated remarkable foresight. In 1981, she and her husband, Fu Sheng, co-founded the independent music record label “Jenfu Records,” making her one of the very few female singers in the Hong Kong music scene to own her own record company and hold the master rights. Albums she released under this record label, such as *Struggle*, not only set one of the highest sales records for physical albums in Hong Kong but also established exceptionally high local industry standards in terms of production quality.
In addition to conventional pop songs, Jenny Tseng’s catalog also includes a large number of English-language cover songs, selections from Broadway musicals, and high-quality live recordings. Industry and historical research indicates that Jenny Tseng is one of the very few bilingual divas who seamlessly bridged the dual golden ages of 1970s Mandarin pop in Taiwan and 1980s Cantonese pop in Hong Kong. Her extensive vinyl and CD catalog serves as an indispensable core archive for studying the cross-regional development of Mandarin-language pop music and the evolution of vocal techniques.
