About

Justin Lo (Justin Lo, real name Luo Dingwei), born on July 1, 1976, in New York, U.S., is a talented male singer, composer, and music producer active in the Hong Kong pop music scene. He completed his education in the U.S. and worked as a web designer at Yahoo. Driven by his passion for music, he returned to Hong Kong and was discovered by veteran music producer Mark Lui. He initially signed with Gold Label as a behind-the-scenes songwriter and composed hit songs such as “Da Xiong” and “Shang Zhui Ren” for top-tier artists like Leo Ku.

In 2005, Justin Lo officially made the transition from behind the scenes to the spotlight, releasing his self-titled debut album, *Justin*. In the Hong Kong music market, which was dominated by idol-style artists at the time, Justin Lo quickly stood out with his signature hat style and exceptionally powerful vocal skills. His singing style is deeply rooted in authentic African-American R&B (Rhythm and Blues) and blues. With exceptional vocal range, he can execute complex and explosive vocal runs in the highest registers while maintaining a rich, resonant chest voice. This technically demanding Western-style vocal approach, combined with catchy Hong Kong-style pop tracks like “Good Man” and “Tough Luck,” made his debut album a massive success both commercially and artistically.

During his time at Gold Medal Entertainment, Justin Lo was one of the very few male singers in Hong Kong’s physical music market to successfully hold a solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum within a very short time (less than a year) of his debut. The production of his albums (such as *No Protection* and *JTV*) relied heavily on his own and Raymond Leung’s arrangement expertise, often blending classical strings, modern hip-hop beats, and R&B melodies, significantly enriching the musical depth of Cantonese pop in the mid-to-late 2000s.

In the early 2010s, Justin Lo briefly ventured into the mainland Chinese market and developed his career in Beijing. He subsequently showcased the dominance of his top-tier live vocals to audiences across Greater China by participating in top-tier mainland music variety shows such as *The Masked Singer* and *Singers*. Industry analysts believe that Justin Lo’s emergence filled a void in the Hong Kong music scene for top-tier male R&B singer-songwriters, and his catalog of studio albums serves as a vital physical archive for studying how modern Western vocal techniques from the post-millennial era were localized and successfully integrated into Cantopop.
