About

Mark Leshley (Patrick Lui / Mark Leshley), born on February 16, 1966, in Hong Kong, is a veteran musician in the Hong Kong pop music scene who is equally renowned for his high profile on stage and his extensive experience as a producer behind the scenes. In 1985, he co-founded the highly influential rock band Tai Chi with his older brother Lei Youyao and others, serving as the band’s lead vocalist. In the years that followed, Tai Chi, along with bands such as Beyond and Daming Yipai, helped shape the “Band Sound” phenomenon in the Hong Kong pop music scene during the mid-to-late 1980s.

In Tai Chi’s classic albums—including *Red Sports Car*, *All Mankind Sings*, and *Hold Me Back*—Mark Leshley demonstrated exceptional mastery of pop rock. His vocal range is highly versatile, capable of delivering both the raw power and intensity required for rock music and perfectly interpreting deep, delicate ballads.

However, Mark Leshley’s more central yet often overlooked contribution to the Hong Kong music industry lies in his decades-long career as a backing vocalist and vocal coach. As one of Hong Kong’s top backing vocalists, Mark Leshley’s name has appeared in the acknowledgments sections of the inner sleeves of physical albums for nearly half of the Hong Kong music scene from the 1980s to the present. From Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, and George Lam, to Eason Chan, Joey Yung—and other legendary stars of their generation—Mark Leshley has been deeply involved in arranging the harmonies and recording live backing vocals for their studio albums and large-scale concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum. His precise control of polyphonic harmonies and highly professional ability to improvise vocal parts provided a solid acoustic foundation for the rich sound of Hong Kong pop recordings.

In the 2000s and beyond, Mark Leshley occasionally released studio albums as a solo artist (such as *Starting Over*), showcasing his personal preference for soft rock and adult contemporary styles. Industry analysts consider Mark Leshley’s professional career to represent the highest standard of “technical expertise” in Hong Kong’s pop music industry. Not only is he the indispensable lead vocalist and soul of the Tai Chi Band, but the vocal harmonies he recorded on countless classic albums also serve as an extremely valuable archival record of Hong Kong’s physical music disc history.
