About

Mayday (Mayday), a pop-rock band from Taiwan, China, consists of lead vocalist Ashin (Chen Hsin-hung), guitarists Monster (Wen Shang-yi) and Stone (Shi Jin-hang), bassist Martha (Cai Shengyan), and drummer Guan You (Liu Yanming). The band was formerly known as “So Band” and officially changed its name to Mayday in 1997. After participating in the recording of underground indie music compilations such as *Rolling Car*, Mayday was discovered by veteran Mandarin music producer Jonathan Lee, and subsequently signed with Rock Records (Rock Records), officially transitioning from an underground band to the mainstream music industry.

In 1999, Mayday released their first full-length studio album of original material, *The First Original Album* (commonly known as *Crazy World*). During their time with Rock Records, they released *Long Live Love* (2000) and *Life Is Like the Sea* (2001) in succession; these three early albums established the band’s creative direction, which interwove Mandarin and Minnan. Their arrangements retained the guitar-driven pop-rock characteristics of a “band sound,” while the lyrics accurately depicted the confusion and passion of Taiwan’s younger generation at the intersection of campus life, romance, and social realities. This narrative perspective, characterized by a “sense of companionship” and “down-to-earth” approach, enabled them to successfully bring the essence of indie rock into the mainstream pop market, which boasts an enormous audience.

As the members gained more life experience, lead singer Ashin’s lyrics gradually began to reflect a broader humanistic concern and philosophical reflection. After leaving Rock Records and co-founding B'in Music (B'in Music), Mayday delved deeply into themes such as the philosophy of life, anti-war sentiments, generational emotions, and the passage of time in concept albums like *Post-Adolescent Poems* (2008), *Second Life* (2011), and *Autobiography* (2016), the band delved deeply into themes such as the philosophy of life, anti-war sentiments, generational emotions, and the passage of time. The albums from this period featured significantly upgraded production standards, extensively incorporating large-scale orchestral arrangements and Britpop elements, and won multiple awards at the Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, including Best Band and Best Mandarin Album.

Industry research indicates that one of Mayday’s major contributions to the Mandarin music industry lies in driving the IP-based development and large-scale industrialization of “large-scale live concert tours.” Their themed tours (such as “Noah’s Ark” and “Life Unlimited”) have repeatedly set new Asian standards in stage mechanics, live recording technology, and visual effects. The numerous high-resolution concert recordings (live albums) and 3D/4DX concert films they have released perfectly demonstrate how a rock band can forge deep ties with the modern commercial pop music market, constituting a core archive of contemporary Chinese youth pop culture.
