About

RubberBand is a well-known pop-rock band based in Hong Kong, China. The band consists of lead vocalist Miao Haochang (No. 6), guitarist and band leader Feng Tingzheng (Ah Zheng), bassist Li Zhaowei (Ah Wei), and drummer Li Wanhong (Ni Yu) (with keyboardist Yi Chen also participating in the early days). After a period of underground rehearsals and independent recordings, the band signed with Gold Typhoon (Gold Typhoon) in 2008, officially debuting in Hong Kong’s mainstream music industry.

Musically, RubberBand displays a complexity and sense of rhythm that far exceed those of traditional Hong Kong rock. Deeply influenced by Western rhythm-based music, the band’s arrangements heavily incorporate brass sections and syncopated rhythms from jazz, funk, soul, and R&B. Lead singer No. 6’s exceptionally rich voice, tinged with a hint of languor, creates a perfect auditory chemistry with this rhythm-driven “groove music.” Their early albums, such as *Apollo 18* and *Beaming*, struck an excellent balance between commercially catchy melodies and high-caliber instrumental performances, quickly earning them an outstanding reputation among Hong Kong’s young audience.

After breaking away from major record company labels to operate as an independent record label (such as R Flat), RubberBand’s musical narratives began to reflect a more expansive and profound sense of social responsibility. In concept albums such as *Easy*, *Hours*, and *i*, the band deeply explored the changing times in Hong Kong society, the survival struggles of the underprivileged, environmental protection, and the fading of cultural memory (as exemplified by their signature tracks “Discovery,” “See You in the Future,” and “Ciao”). These works have repeatedly won top honors at major music award ceremonies in Hong Kong (such as the Metro Radio Music Awards), cementing the band’s unique status as chroniclers of the times.

For live performances and recorded releases, RubberBand’s concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum often feature an exceptionally large orchestra combining Chinese and Western instruments. Their high-resolution live recording digital albums and Blu-ray video releases represent the highest standard of live sound reproduction technology among contemporary Hong Kong rock bands in terms of mixing engineering. Industry observers consider RubberBand’s discography to be a core sonic archive documenting how the Hong Kong music industry seamlessly fused the spirit of indie rock with sophisticated pop production in the 21st century.
