About

S.H.E is a phenomenal all-female idol group that has exerted an unprecedented and unparalleled commercial and cultural influence on the Mandarin pop music industry. The group consists of three members: Ren Jiaxuan (Selina), Hebe Tien (Hebe), and Chen Jiahua (Ella). The three were discovered in 2000 after participating in the “Cosmos 2000 Talent Contest for Beautiful Girls,” a joint production by Cosmos Records (the predecessor to HIM International Music) and Taiwan’s China Television (CTV) in 2000, and officially debuted in September 2001 with the release of their first studio album, *Girls’ Dormitory*.

In terms of music planning and the music industry’s star-making process, S.H.E is considered HIM International Music’s greatest masterpiece. record label meticulously carved out complementary vocal parts and personas for the three members: Selina’s sweet high notes and gentle demeanor, Hebe’s crystal-clear extreme high notes and independent spirit, and Ella’s rich mid-to-low tones and androgynous, straightforward image created exceptionally rich harmonic layers and an extremely broad audience reach. During the subsequent decade-long period of frequent album releases (such as *Brave New World* *Super Star*, and *Don’t Want to Grow Up*), S.H.E incorporated a wide range of musical styles, including R&B, Japanese and Korean electronic dance music, rock, and Chinese-style pop pop. Her songs combined highly catchy chorus melodies (hooks) with positive values exploring adolescent emotions and female independence, achieving staggering physical album sales in the tens of millions across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia.

Beyond conventional audio recordings, S.H.E’s commercial value was deeply intertwined with the golden age of Taiwanese idol dramas and a vast network of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) endorsements. Many of the original soundtracks (OSTs) they performed have consistently maintained extremely high long-tail playback figures on global Chinese digital streaming platforms.

In 2018, as the contracts of the three members with their former agency, HIM International Music, officially expired, S.H.E’s entertainment career entered a new phase of autonomy. The three members each established their own independent studios (such as Ren Zhen Mei Hao, Le Lai Le Hao, and Jin Hua Entertainment) and subsequently became embroiled in a highly debated industry dispute over the ownership of “group trademark usage rights and copyrights to historical master recordings.” Both the music industry and the legal community generally agree that S.H.E’s discography and trademark history represent not only the most classic success story of the Greater China region’s female idol industry in the early 21st century, but also a historic, textbook-worthy case study of how top-tier artists in the digital age have broken away from traditional capital to pursue autonomous IP management and copyright control.
