About

Tizzy Bac is an independent rock band from Taiwan, China, formed in 1999. The band consists of lead vocalist and keyboardist Chen Hui-ting, bassist Zhe-yu (deceased), and drummer Qian Yuan. Within the rock music scene in Taiwan and across the Greater China region, Tizzy Bac is renowned for its extremely rare and sonically subversive “guitar-less” lineup, establishing its irreplaceable status as a pioneer of Mandarin-language “Piano Rock.”

In the traditional rock music industry, the distortion and riffs of electric guitars are often central to creating a sense of sonic power. In contrast, Tizzy Bac creatively relies on keyboards—particularly rich piano and synthesizer tones—to drive the melodic lines and harmonic arrangements, all while complementing them with aggressive, full-bodied basslines and complex, ever-changing jazz and funk drum patterns. This unique instrumental combination gives the band’s soundscape both the hardcore explosiveness of rock music and the lush, layered keyboard textures that blend classical and modern elements.

Lyrically, lead singer Chen Hui-ting’s compositions feature a strong stream-of-consciousness style characterized by “rambling” monologues. Her lyrics (such as “Madame Puss in Boots!!!” and “It’s Because We Can Feel Pain”) often use extremely lengthy song titles and intricate narratives to explore the existential anxiety, self-alienation, and emotional turmoil of contemporary urban youth. Operating as an independent record label, Tizzy Bac’s album pursues extremely high spatial separation in recording and mixing to ensure that the keyboard and bass frequency ranges do not interfere with one another. Thanks to these high-quality studio recordings, the band has not only consistently headlined major Taiwanese indie music festivals (such as Spring Scream and Dagan Music Festival) but has also received multiple nominations and accolades at the Golden Melody Awards.

Industry critics and independent music historians agree that Tizzy Bac’s catalog of physical and digital releases spanning more than two decades has not only expanded the boundaries of imagination in the instrumentation industry of Mandarin-language rock but also serves as a technically sophisticated and culturally profound acoustic testament to Taiwan’s independent music scene as it evolved from underground live houses to the mainstream grand stage.
