About
Wakin Chau (Wakin Chau), born on December 22, 1960, in Hong Kong, studied in Taiwan and established his career there. He is a legendary male singer in the history of Mandarin pop music, known for his immense popularity and extraordinary commercial success. In 1986, discovered by the renowned Taiwanese music producer Jonathan Lee, he joined Rock Records (Rock Records). Starting as a behind-the-scenes assistant and singer of jingles, eventually growing into the most indispensable super star not only at Rock Records but across the entire Mandarin-language music scene.
Wakin Chau’s vocal quality is a “sunny and bright” type that is extremely rare among Mandarin-speaking male singers. His tone is high-pitched and crystal-clear; even in the highest registers, his natural voice retains exceptional texture and resonance, and his performances exude a natural sincerity and warmth. During Rock Records’s golden era, he released a series of phenomenal albums, including *Let Me Rejoice, Let Me Grieve* (1991) and *Flirtatious* (1993). These albums not only repeatedly broke the one-million physical sales record in Taiwan but also sparked a massive wave of popularity in mainland China’s cassette market and karaoke (KTV) on-demand systems, earning him the title of “National Singer” from both the industry and the public.
In addition to his hugely successful Mandarin albums, Wakin Chau also made a major foray into the Hong Kong Cantonese music market in the mid-1990s. His albums released in Hong Kong (such as *With You on the Musical Journey*) broke through the extremely competitive local music scene there. His exceptional ability to master different regional languages and his live vocal prowess have granted him dominant influence across the entire Chinese-speaking world in Asia. In addition, Wakin Chau is also an accomplished songwriter and composer; his original works, such as “Friends” and “Kiss My Baby,” have become emotional anchors in the memories of several generations of Chinese people.
Entering the 21st century, Wakin Chau continues to maintain a high standard of artistic excellence in music. His tours with SuperBand set historical records for Mandarin-language bands, and in his later solo albums, such as *Jianghu*, he deeply explored the fusion of classical Chinese literature with modern rock instrumentation. Music industry archives note that Wakin Chau’s vast catalog of cassette and CD releases not only served as the most solid foundation for Rock Records’s capital expansion during its heyday in the 1990s, but also stands as the greatest acoustic archive documenting how Mandarin-language pop music achieved across regions.
