Album

Release Types

A music product consisting of multiple recorded tracks or longer-form programs, named and organized as a single, complete release; there are no globally standardized limits on the number of tracks or the total running time.

Explanation

专辑 (Album) is a musical product that organizes multiple recordings or a longer program into a single, complete release, typically featuring a unified title, track order, cover art, and release information. It can be released on various media, such as vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes, digital downloads, or streaming platforms; the term “album” describes the work and its release format, not a specific physical medium.

The term originates from the early practice of binding multiple records into a booklet resembling a photo album. After long-playing records became widespread, a single LP could accommodate material that previously required multiple records, and “album” gradually came to refer to the complete content contained within it. While CDs and digital releases have eliminated the direct constraints of record rotation speed and physical disc structure, 专辑 the conventions of track sequencing, a unified title, and release as a single product remain. 专辑 has no fixed number of tracks or duration that applies to all countries, charts, and platforms. Digital services, record sales certification bodies, and award organizations set their own thresholds for albums, singles, and EPs; these rules may differ from one another and are subject to change over time. The official designation of the product by the artist and record label, along with the release context and content structure, typically provide a clearer indication of its type than a single numerical threshold.

An “Album” can also be combined with other attributes. A “Studio Album” consists primarily of studio recordings produced specifically for that project; a “Live Album” captures a live performance; a “Compilation Album” brings together existing recordings; and a “Soundtrack Album” is organized around a film, television, or stage production. While all of these can be 专辑, they differ in terms of content source and editorial purpose.

A single 专辑 can give rise to multiple specific release instances, such as vinyl releases in different regions, CDs with bonus tracks, anniversary reissues, and digital deluxe editions. They share the same work concept at the 专辑 level, but may differ in barcodes, catalog numbers, track order, master recordings, and packaging; “the same album” does not equate to “the same release.”
