Audio-Only Disc

Disc Content Types

Discs whose primary or sole playable content consists of audio programs; the specific media may include CDs, SACDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, or other audio formats.

Explanation

纯音频碟 (Audio-Only Disc) is a disc on which audio programs are the primary or sole playable content. It is a description of content configuration, not a distinct physical format: standard audio CDs, SACDs, DVD-Audio, Blu-ray Audio, and products that use a DVD-Video structure to carry still images accompanied by an audio track may all be referred to as 纯音频碟 in a commercial context.

“Audio-only” typically means there is no main program footage requiring continuous viewing, but the disc may still include menus, static cover art, lyrics, on-screen navigation, and black-screen video. When DVD-Video must organize content using a video application structure, producers may use static or simple visuals to carry LPCM, Dolby, or DTS audio tracks; from a technical standpoint, it remains DVD-Video and does not thereby become DVD-Audio. Audio capabilities vary significantly across different media formats. CD-DA is fixed at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo PCM; SACD uses DSD; and DVD-Audio and Blu-ray can provide multichannel audio and higher sampling rates. “Audio-Only” merely indicates the content’s focus; it does not imply anything about the encoding, number of channels, whether the audio is lossless, or playback device requirements.

The 纯音频碟 in a concert box set may feature the same performance as the main video disc, or it may use a different mix, track order, or performance. Even if the title is the same, the audio disc and video tracks do not need to match sample-for-sample.

If a disc contains a significant amount of music videos, documentaries, or concert footage, it is more appropriately classified as a Mixed-Content Disc. A small amount of menu animation or static images does not alter the “Audio-Only” classification; the determination is based on the primary consumable content, not on the presence of any video data in the file system.
