Behind-the-Scenes

Additional footage documenting the production process of a performance, recording, film, or music video; content may include rehearsals, set construction, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with crew members.

Explanation

幕后花絮 (Behind-the-Scenes, or BTS for short) refers to video content that documents the production process of a work or event; it is commonly found on CDs and in digital releases of concerts, movies, albums, and music videos. It focuses on rehearsals, recording sessions, stage setup, makeup, filming, post-production, and crew collaboration, distinguishing itself from the formal performances featured in the final product.

Behind-the-scenes footage may be systematically shot by a dedicated film crew, or it may consist of on-site recordings, cell phone footage, surveillance footage, and creator narrations. The final footage is typically curated and edited, and may include narration, subtitles, background music, and staged interviews; thus, it is an edited presentation of the production process rather than unedited, raw footage. “Behind-the-Scenes” and “Documentary” overlap in scope. Behind-the-scenes footage usually centers on a specific main work, is relatively short in length, and is released as bonus content; documentaries, on the other hand, may establish independent themes, narratives, and distribution identities. However, feature-length “making-of” documentaries can fall into both categories; classification should be based on the content’s focus and official positioning, rather than solely on duration.

Deleted scenes, outtakes, trailers, and still photo galleries are also often listed alongside 幕后花絮, but they are not the same type of content. Deleted scenes consist of performances from the original work that were not used, while 幕后花絮 documents how the work was produced; outtakes can be part of behind-the-scenes content, but when compiled separately, they are more accurately referred to as bloopers or outtakes.

The terms “Making of,” “Backstage,” “Tour Documentary,” and “Behind the Scenes” used in disc menus are not standardized. The same footage may be re-edited or renamed in different regional versions; when identifying such content, one should consider the actual content rather than simply copying the menu titles.
