Box Set

Packaging

A product format in which multiple audio recordings, video recordings, or related accessories are combined into a single release unit within an outer case; there are no uniform restrictions on the content media or the internal packaging method.

Explanation

套装盒 (Box Set) is a product format that combines multiple media items or related items into a single release unit. The contents may include multiple CDs, vinyl records, DVDs, Blu-rays, or cassette tapes, or a combination of books, photographs, reproductions, and other accessories. “Box Set” describes the combination of items and the external packaging; it is not an audio format, nor does it guarantee that all included items are on the same medium. The outer box may consist of a cardboard lid-and-base set, a book-style magnetic-closure case, a drawer-style box, a slipcase, a wooden box, a metal box, or other custom structures. The interior may contain individual jewel cases, paper sleeves, record sleeves, trays, and dividers. If multiple discs are housed in a single standard-thickness case, the publisher may sometimes refer to it as a box set; conversely, a large outer case may contain only a single disc accompanied by a large amount of printed material. Therefore, whether a product qualifies as a “box set” cannot be determined solely by the number of discs.

The organization of a box set’s contents typically reflects its editorial scope: it may compile a complete body of work, recordings from a specific period, a series of performances, multichannel and stereo versions, or combine existing albums with previously unreleased material. Individual discs may retain the boundaries of the original albums or be rearranged by era or theme. The box set title, catalog number, and barcode identify the entire set, while individual discs within it may still bear independent numbers, labels, or artwork reproduced from earlier editions.

“Compilation” and “套装盒” are at different levels. “Compilation” describes the content as having been assembled, while “Box Set” describes the release and packaging format; a single disc can be a compilation, and a multi-disc set can also contain a complete but lengthy work. Marketing terms such as “Deluxe Edition” or “Limited Edition” do not necessarily equate to a box set, unless the product is actually released as a set comprising multiple components.

The outer case and inner packaging may be made of different materials, and their conditions must be recorded separately. Wear on the outer case or missing accessories does not alter the content on the discs, but it renders the product incomplete; Replacing the inner sleeve may preserve the disc but result in the loss of the original tray, sticker, or serial number. Reissues in different regions may retain the same audio content but feature a scaled-down outer case, switch to a paper sleeve, or combine multiple discs, resulting in products with different structures.
