Extended Play

Release Types

A music release that typically falls between a single and a full-length album in size is known as an EP; the number of tracks and total running time vary depending on the market, platform, and artist.

Explanation

迷你专辑 (Extended Play, or EP for short) is a music release that typically falls between a single and a full-length album in scope. The term originates from the vinyl era: an EP featured extended playing time or additional tracks on a record similar in size to a standard single, yet was still shorter than a full-length album. Later, the EP evolved into a cross-platform release format, appearing on CDs, cassettes, downloads, and streaming services.

An EP generally contains several independent tracks that form a cohesive mini-collection. The difference between an EP and a maxi-single lies not only in the number of tracks: even though a maxi-single may be longer in duration, its content often revolves around one or two lead tracks and their remixes; an EP, on the other hand, is closer to a condensed album. However, artists and record label may name their releases according to their creative vision, as there is no globally standardized legal definition within the industry. Streaming services, charts, and certification bodies establish their own rules regarding track count and total duration for classification purposes, chart eligibility, or royalty reporting. A release may be promoted as an EP but appear in the “Albums” section due to platform thresholds; conversely, a platform’s automatic classification as an EP may not necessarily reflect the artist’s official designation. These operational rules cannot serve as an encyclopedic definition applicable to all eras and media.

The Chinese term “迷你专辑” is often used to correspond to an EP, but the “mini album” in East Asian markets may also be a local marketing classification, with a length comparable to short albums in other markets. When documenting specific releases, retaining the original designation—whether “EP,” “mini album,” or “album”—is more accurate than reclassifying all short releases under a single numerical category.

An EP can be an official, promotional, or unofficial release, and may consist of studio, live, or broadcast recordings. These attributes are independent of the length and organizational format described by “Extended Play.”
