Explanation

DVD 塑料盒 (Keep Case) is a type of book-style optical disc case made of flexible plastic that became a common format for home video discs following the widespread adoption of DVD-Video. It is typically taller than a CD Jewel Case and features a continuous spine when closed; a printed sleeve covering the front cover, spine, and back cover can be inserted under the outer transparent film. “Keep Case” is the industry term for this packaging structure; it is not part of the DVD specification and does not require the case to contain a DVD.

The case body is usually molded as a single piece from polypropylene, with a thin-walled hinge in the center that allows for repeated opening and closing. An inner disc retainer in the center grips the disc’s center hole, and the front cover may feature a book-style clasp; multi-disc versions may have disc retainers on both sides or include additional page-turning supports. Compared to the hard and brittle polystyrene Jewel Case, polypropylene cases are generally less prone to shattering when subjected to impact; however, disc clips, plastic film, and hinges can still fail in various ways due to design, materials, and aging. Common DVD cases are approximately 190 millimeters tall, with thicknesses varying among standard, slim, and multi-disc models. Blu-ray later adopted a similar, shorter plastic case; in some regions, product lines are distinguished by different colors, top markings, or locking mechanisms. Similar appearances do not guarantee identical case dimensions, disc latch positions, or space for accessories; therefore, “Keep Case” cannot be regarded as a single, precise size. Brand names such as “Amaray” are also often used to refer to specific designs.

The disc latch should release the disc when pressed at the center; avoid forcing the disc to bend from the edges. Different designs may feature petal-shaped tabs, buttons, or elastic rings; if the case is too tight, it increases stress on the center hole, while if it is too loose, the disc may fall out during shipping. Anti-theft locks, eco-friendly cutouts, recycled materials, and thinner construction within the case can also alter its rigidity and the support provided to the disc.

In addition to the Keep Case, a paper slipcase, O-card, or collector’s box may be used as supplementary packaging. Although Snap Cases are also commonly used for DVDs, they combine a cardboard front panel with a plastic snap-fit frame and are not the same as standard all-plastic Keep Cases; SteelBooks, which feature a metal shell and an internal plastic tray, should also be distinguished separately.
