Explanation

音乐节 (Music Festival) refers to a series of musical performances united by a common event name, curatorial theme, and organizational framework. Modern 音乐节s typically bring together multiple artists or groups, may take place over one or several days on one or more stages, and may also incorporate art exhibitions, lectures, dining, and community activities. Scale and whether the event is held outdoors are not the only defining factors.

A 音乐节 can be curated around musical genres, regions, instruments, religious festivals, cultural traditions, or specific concepts, and may also function as an annual or regularly held branded event. The program is curated by the organizer; individual artists’ set times are typically shorter than those at their solo concerts, though the headline act may receive stage time approaching that of a full-length concert. Participants are collectively part of the 音乐节 lineup but are not required to collaborate with one another. It differs from a joint concert in terms of the event’s identity. A “Joint Concert” primarily highlights a limited number of co-headliners, whereas a “Music Festival” centers on the festival brand and the overall lineup; an event featuring multiple acts on the same night may simply be a “variety show,” and without an ongoing festival framework, it may not be appropriate to call it a “festival.” The inclusion of “Fest” in the name still depends on the actual organizational structure.

音乐节 may involve on-site ticket sales, radio broadcasts, live online streaming, or the production of audio-visual recordings for release. Live broadcasts often cover only a portion of the stage, and subsequent compilations may feature only a select few artists; therefore, a specific release does not automatically represent the entire event. Conversely, a live album titled with the name of a specific 音乐节 merely indicates the source of the recording; the medium itself is not a 音乐节.

An 音乐节 brand may authorize regional events in different cities or change venues, organizers, and program themes from year to year. When comparing editions, it is necessary to distinguish between the event series, the specific year, the individual show, and the specific stage; a single long-standing brand name cannot be used to represent all actual events.
