About
FlyingDog (Fei Gou) is a highly influential independent anime music planning, production, and record label in Japanrecord label, affiliated with the JVC Kenwood Victor Entertainment Group (Victor Entertainment). The origins of this record label can be traced back to Victor’s anime divisions in the 1990s (such as the m-serve department), and it officially underwent a brand restructuring and became an independent legal entity around 2007.
In the traditional Japanese anime music (anisong) market, audiences typically focus more on the connection between songs and the anime’s storyline, while placing relatively less emphasis on the recording quality and complexity of the arrangements themselves. However, FlyingDog has completely broken through this limitation in the course of its development. record label raised the instrumental arrangements and recording standards of anime music to audiophile levels by extensively bringing in top producers from the pop, independent electronic, and mainstream jazz scenes. The most representative example of this is record label’s in-depth collaboration with legendary composer Yoko Kanno on works such as *Cowboy Bebop*, *Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.*, and *Macross Plus*. The soundtracks (OSTs) for these anime series, which make extensive use of live orchestral recordings, authentic bebop jazz, and avant-garde electronic samples, have received extremely high acclaim in the international audio community.
In terms of artist discovery and management, FlyingDog has established a high-standard training system for voice actor-singers and anime-related musicians. record label has successfully launched highly talented artists such as Maaya Sakamoto, Megumi Nakajima, May'n, and FictionJunction, led by Yuki Kajiura. In particular, Maaya Sakamoto’s physical albums have consistently featured high-budget, cross-border recording and production overseas, blurring the lines between “anime music” and “high-quality J-Pop.”
For the music archiving and physical record collecting communities, the CDs, vinyl (LP), and high-resolution audio (Hi-Res) releases from FlyingDog represent the pinnacle of Japan’s “Media Mix” music projects in the realm of pure acoustics. Its vast catalog of licensed works serves as a core repository for researching the cross-industry integration of the contemporary Japanese pop music and anime industries, as well as how film and television soundtracks achieve artistic independence.
