About

HIM International Music (HIM International Music) is the largest independent pop music record label in Taiwan that has demonstrated the greatest commercial vitality and been a leading example of capital operations since the start of the 21st century. The company was founded in 1999 by Lü Yanqing, a former senior executive at What’s Music, along with a group of seasoned music producers. During a historical period marked by large-scale acquisitions of local record label by multinational record company, HIM International successfully secured a pivotal position in the Mandarin pop music scene through its strong planning capabilities and flexible localized operations.

Hua Yan International’s most notable achievement in the industry lies in its highly sophisticated and precise idol group packaging system. In 2001, record label launched the girl group S.H.E. By meticulously assigning distinct vocal roles and personalities to three female artists with unique traits, and pairing them with highly catchy pop melodies and youthful visual packaging, the group quickly rose to become Asia’s top girl group. Subsequently, Hwa Yen followed the same formula to successfully launch several highly marketable groups—including Fahrenheit, Power Station, and Popu Lady—solidifying its dominant position in the management of Mandarin-speaking groups.

In addition to idol groups, Hwa Ya International has also excelled in incubating talent show contestants and commercializing independent musicians. Through Taiwan’s phenomenon-level talent show *Super Star Avenue*, Hwa Ya signed talented vocalists such as Yoga Lin, Zhou Hui, and Yan Yalun. In particular, Yoga Lin’s discography demonstrates Hwa Yen’s exceptional ability to strike a balance between musical experimentation (such as psychedelic rock and art-pop) and the mass consumer market. Furthermore, record label was also the biggest winner in the Taiwanese idol drama soundtrack (OST) market of the 2000s, generating massive physical album sales through a deep integration of “artists starring in the shows and performing the soundtracks.”

In terms of business model, Hwa Ya International was the first music company in Taiwan to establish and thoroughly implement the “360-degree full copyright” operational concept. record label not only firmly controls all studio master recordings and copyrights for lyrics and music but also is deeply involved in every aspect of its artists’ careers, from concert production and advertising endorsements to merchandise and talent management. In 2013, HIM International Music successfully listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, becoming Taiwan’s first locally-based entertainment and cultural creative enterprise to go public.

Music industry research indicates that the vast number of physical CDs and audiovisual recordings released by Hwa Yen International not only serve as an auditory record of the golden age of Mandarin pop music in the post-millennial era, but its corporate governance structure and copyright management model also stand as a classic textbook case for the transformation of the Greater China music industry toward modernization and securitization.
