About

HYBE (formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment) is a major South Korean multinational entertainment conglomerate that has profoundly reshaped the landscape of the contemporary global pop music industry. The company was founded in 2005 by music producer Bang Si-hyuk. In its early days, the company was small and occupied a marginal position in the South Korean K-pop market, which was dominated by the traditional “Big Three” entertainment companies—SM, YG, and JYP.

HYBE’s historic turning point began with the 2013 debut of the boy band BTS (Bangtan Boys). In terms of music planning, Bang Si-hyuk rejected the purely pop-dance approach typical of traditional idol groups, imbuing the group with a strong hip-hop foundation and allowing members to be heavily involved in songwriting and composition. Their early discography extensively explored the pressures of academic competition, social injustice, and issues of self-identity faced by Korean youth. This deeply sincere and socially critical narrative, combined with highly entertaining, high-energy stage performances, helped them build an extremely loyal global fanbase (ARMY). Subsequently, as BTS repeatedly topped the U.S. Billboard charts and earned Grammy Award nominations, HYBE completely shattered the Western pop music industry’s regional stereotypes about K-Pop.

In 2021, the company officially changed its name to HYBE and fully transitioned to a “multi-record label system (Multi-Label System).” In the music production and copyrightrelease segment (HYBE Labels), the company successively acquired established labels such as Source Music, Pledis Entertainment, and KOZ Entertainment, and established BELIFT LAB and ADOR (led by Min Hee-jin), which successfully created the phenomenon-level girl group NewJeans. Furthermore, HYBE invested heavily to acquire Ithaca Holdings, a U.S. music company that manages international superstars such as Justin Bieber, officially joining the ranks of the world’s top music investment firms.

In terms of the convergence of technology and music platforms, HYBE has established its own global fan lifestyle platform, Weverse. In terms of audio distribution standards, its vast catalog of recordings not only comprehensively covers major streaming platforms but also actively promotes new digital distribution formats, including high-resolution audio (Hi-Res), digital merchandise, and interactive music content. Industry research generally holds that the history of HYBE serves as the ultimate modern business case study of how contemporary popular culture has achieved commercial breakthroughs by leveraging digital social media, independent record label aggregation models, and global audience engagement.
