(Merry Go Round Ltd., which later evolved into related independent record label such as Polar Bear Production) is an independent music production and entertainment agency based in Hong Kong, China. The agency was founded in late 1999 by Paul Wong (Huang Guanzhong), one of the lead guitarists and vocalists of the legendary Hong Kong rock band Beyond, following the band’s announcement that it would temporarily go its separate ways.
The background of Merry Go Round Ltd.’s founding deeply reflects the industry contradictions within the Hong Kong pop music scene from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. At that time, Hong Kong’s mainstream record company relied heavily on commercially packaged idol singers and karaoke love songs (K-songs), while music genres emphasizing self-expression—such as rock—often struggled to secure sufficient production budgets and creative freedom.
