About

Merry Go Round Ltd. (Merry Go Round Ltd., which later evolved into related independent record label such as Polar Bear Production) is an independent music production and entertainment agency based in Hong Kong, China. The agency was founded in late 1999 by Paul Wong (Huang Guanzhong), one of the lead guitarists and vocalists of the legendary Hong Kong rock band Beyond, following the band’s announcement that it would temporarily go its separate ways.

The background of Merry Go Round Ltd.’s founding deeply reflects the industry contradictions within the Hong Kong pop music scene from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. At that time, Hong Kong’s mainstream record company relied heavily on commercially packaged idol singers and karaoke love songs (K-songs), while music genres emphasizing self-expression—such as rock—often struggled to secure sufficient production budgets and creative freedom. Wong Kwan-chung’s original intention in founding “Merry Go Round Ltd.” was precisely to break free from the numerous creative constraints imposed by major record company driven by commercial interests, to seek a fully autonomous space for musical experimentation, and to leverage his own industry experience to support local rock and independent musicians.

In terms of record label’s musical production style, the catalog released by Merry Go Round Ltd. is heavily influenced by hard rock, metal, and indie pop. Under the leadership of Wong Kwan-chung, record label provided a free acoustic testing ground for his solo albums (such as *Yellow Paul Wong* and *Black and White*). These albums emphasized the distorted tension of guitars and heavy beats in their arrangements and instrumentation, and deliberately retained the raw texture of live rock performances in their recording and mixing, creating a stark auditory contrast with the over-polished electronic pop dominating the mainstream market at the time.

In addition to releasing Paul Wong’s solo works, Merry Go Round Ltd. also participated in or supported music projects by early Hong Kong underground rap and nu-metal bands such as LMF (Da Lan Tang). Industry critics view Merry Go Round Ltd. as an independent rock record label from the early 2000s in Hong Kong, representing a significant historical attempt by mature musicians to leverage their accumulated capital and technical expertise to drive the independent development of Hong Kong’s local rock scene. The physical albums it produced serve as a precious audio archive documenting Hong Kong rock’s quest for independent production autonomy in the post-Beyond era.
