About
Ocean Butterflies Music (Ocean Butterflies Music) is a major independent record label and talent agency of significant cross-regional strategic importance in the Chinese-language pop music industry. In 1986, the company was co-founded in Singapore by veteran musicians including Xu Huanliang, Huang Yuancheng, Wu Jianfeng, and Lin Qiuli. At a time when the Chinese-language pop music landscape was dominated by Taiwan and Hong Kong, Ocean Butterflies Music, leveraging its exceptionally solid foundation in songwriting and composition as well as its professional musician training system, successfully pioneered a commercial pathway for the reverse export of “Singapore-Malaysia Mandarin Pop (Sing-pop & M-pop)” to the Greater China region.
Ocean Butterflies Music’s core competitiveness lies in its comprehensive “Star-Making Workshop” system. In the late 1990s, record label established the professional “Haidie Forest” performing arts training school. Through systematic vocal training, songwriting and composition coaching, and stage choreography, Haidie discovered and nurtured a large number of top-tier artists who would later dominate the Mandarin music scene. In the early 2000s, Ocean Butterflies Music successfully launched Ado. His husky, world-weary voice, paired with high-quality pop ballads, generated astonishing physical album sales across the Asian market. Subsequently, JJ Lin (JJ Lin) rose to prominence with phenomenon-level, self-composed albums such as *Jiangnan*, firmly establishing Ocean Butterflies Music’s position among the top-tier record label in the Mandarin music scene.
In terms of business strategy, Ocean Butterflies Music is one of the very few independent music companies to have established a full industry chain across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Singapore-Malaysia region at a very early stage. In the mid-to-late 2000s, record label signed high-profile artists such as Jin Sha, Xue Zhiqian (in his early career), and Xu Song, among other highly popular singers, and through its controlling stake in Taihe Music Group, achieved in-depth resource integration in the digital rights and streaming era.
Industry research indicates that Ocean Butterflies Music’s transnational distribution catalog not only encompasses exceptionally high-quality R&B, traditional-style pop, and Adult Contemporary (AC) ballads, but the company’s historical trajectory—from a local Southeast Asian music collective to a multinational music production giant—serves as an exceptional commercial case study for examining how overseas Chinese pop culture capital has successfully entered and influenced mainstream Mandarin music aesthetics.
