About the artist
aMEI is a Taiwanese female singer and music producer. The Puyuma name is Kulilay Amit, the Han name is 張惠妹, and the nickname is 阿妹. aMEI was born August 9, 1972, from the 大巴六九 community in Beinan Township, Taitung County, and belongs to the Puyuma people. The English Wikipedia records the birthplace as the Tamalakaw community of Beinan, Taitung.
In 1992, at twenty, aMEI left home in Taitung for the first time, worked at an older sister's Japanese restaurant in Taipei, and sold clothes from a street stall. Afterwards, because of the father's hope, aMEI entered the Mandarin section of the "Five Lights star singing ring" on TTV's variety show "五燈獎", and drew attention in the community. After the father died, aMEI for a time could not pick up the feeling for music again, until in 1995 aMEI began singing in a local bar with the rock band Relax, formed by a musician cousin.
In March 1996 aMEI signed with 豐華唱片. In July aMEI first sang the male-female duet "最愛的人傷我最深" on 張雨生's album "兩伊戰爭-紅色熱情". On December 13 the same year the first album, Sisters, came out. On October 20, 1997 teacher 張雨生 had a serious car accident and died on November 12 the same year. In that time aMEI visited many times.
On May 17, 1997 Billboard Magazine called aMEI the most popular singer in Asia. In January 1998 the first solo tour began, in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. In February NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, formally invited aMEI to perform as a representative of Taiwan at the year's "Asia Live Dream". The same year aMEI received the female-singer gold at Commercial Radio Hong Kong's chart awards, and the Asia Pacific Music Award at the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs awards.
At the start of 1999 the Coca-Cola Company asked aMEI to be that year's spokesperson for Sprite across Asia. The advertisement was shot in Shanghai, and the shoot once blocked traffic. The Chinese Wikipedia records that aMEI was the first Chinese singer to speak for that brand. The endorsement began in January 1999, and the advertisement sings "給我感覺". On June 8 the same year the fifth album came out, and on December 28 a compilation, in English Can I Hug You, Lover? and A-Mei New Century Collection. The English Wikipedia describes the unstoppable standing of that time as "sister power", and records that Huasheng Magazine listed aMEI among the 1999 "Top Ten Chinese Voice Figures".
On April 14, 2000 a live album came out, Time to Say Goodbye, A-Mei Hong Kong Live. In June the same year the mainland Chinese health-products company 太阳神集团 sued the Coca-Cola Company, saying the Sprite commercial song "日出" that aMEI recorded copied the words, the music and the main melody of the company's theme "當太陽升起的時候", and that the lyric "when that sun rises" was especially like "when the sun rises". On December 5 the seventh studio album, Regardless, came out. It was also the last original studio album aMEI released on 豐華唱片.
On February 15, 2004, at the 3rd MTV Asia Awards, aMEI a second time received "most popular singer in Taiwan".
At the start of 2005 aMEI went to Boston to study, and after returning to Taiwan paid NT$50 million to end early a management contract that was to run four years. The same year the Chinese Wikipedia records that with the album "也許明天" aMEI pressed past Oasis's "真實的謊言", Coldplay's "X&Y密碼" and other works, topped the British NME's "best British album of the new century" and became the cover figure, the only Chinese singer to appear on that magazine's cover.
In 2007 EMI held an all-Asia press conference in Hong Kong and announced signing aMEI. The Chinese Wikipedia records that the signing fee for a three-records-in-three-years contract reached NT$150 million, the highest female-singer signing fee at the time. From March to May 2008 aMEI joined the tour of the Japanese musical "杜蘭朵". Joe Hisaishi produced it and Amon Miyamoto directed it. aMEI and many Japanese actors performed 59 shows in a row, in ancient Japanese, in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and other places.
In January 2014 aMEI appeared on the Asian LGBT-rights hero list of the Singapore international LGBT magazine "ELEMENT愛力先生". aMEI also once held a free outdoor concert at Huashan 1914 Creative Park, in support of making same-sex marriage legal.
The Chinese Wikipedia records that aMEI inherited 蘇芮's singing style of the 1980s, that the mixed-voice technique (half chest resonance and half head resonance) is accomplished and can carry a thick high note, very different from the fine, graceful high notes that Chinese-language female singers of the time usually sang with head resonance, and that the two performed together several times and that aMEI, as a junior, more than once received 蘇芮's approval. Statistics of the 4th China Gold Record Awards show that, among imported Hong Kong and Taiwan artists' record sales in the mainland from 1995 to 2003, the top four, the "heavenly kings and queens", were Jacky Cheung, Wakin Chau, aMEI and Faye Wong.
"牙買加的檳榔" is the first song in which aMEI tried a reggae style. The video for "放了那個作品" was chosen by the overseas site "Fantastic Music Videos" as one of the top 15 best animated music videos of the first half of 2015.
In June 2019 the video game "完美世界M" held a launch press conference and invited aMEI and 頑童 MJ116 as spokespersons. The two had performed together at the 27th Golden Melody Awards in 2016, and this time shared a stage again and sang the game theme "Better Dayz". Member 瘦子 E.SO produced the song. In January 2020 a public-service advertisement for WildAid's "守護海洋守護鯊" invited aMEI, a WildAid global ambassador, to be filmed.
Liberty Times records that the greatest drive for founding "聲動娛樂" came from wanting control of the career: rather than be kept as a diva inside a company while production costs and the budget stay in someone else's hands, aMEI would rather found a brand of aMEI's own, and that although the money earned is not as much as before, there is complete freedom to invest in oneself or save money for oneself.
On January 24, 2025 aMEI gave a voice to the Big Tree Project charity. aMEI personally gathered the cast of "帶我走2026臺東跨年晚會" and served as general director. aMEI has also been on the cover of the China edition of Rolling Stone.
